Russia invading Ukraine (NEWS/UPDATES)

There is not a chance NATO will be coordinated enough to stop anything Putin wanted to do. I think mainland western Europe is a very vulnerable target if Putin wanted to go full mental. The Russians want a buffer between their borders and what they see as a threat. they've been bashed a few time in the last couple of hundred years.

Actually, it would be interesting if anyone on here has knowledge of military tactics to see what scenarios would be possible.

Interesting there mate.

Western Europe

They could capture some key crossings along the Oder, perhaps

They’d storm through Poland after launching from Belarus

They won’t go near any NATO country with the mutual defence pact unless Putin Is going to take a massive calculated risk that NATO wouldn’t offer mutual defence and he can bring about the end of it.

He won’t go near Germany or any other country that could ruin them financially

And he obviously won’t go near any nuclear weapons countries. Which is only really us and France

The suggestion has always been the Dnieper river but I wouldn’t rule out the Baltic countries if it really goes badly - ie Estonia, Latvia
It will take a lot more than just that if Putin is really serious, and then there’s the question of China also.

Putin has bravado, is a tactician and has nuclear weapons as the ultimate fallback.

Aside from that in a conventional war NATO would wipe the floor with Russia. The US alone invests something ridiculous like 45x what Russia does on its military each year

See this is the stuff I love.

It still could all go wrong because of unforeseen circumstances. Is Putin that bothered about financial ruin? Would France or UK deploy nuclear weapons to save Germany?

Is putin stable enough not to deploy nuclear weapons? USA didn't do a very good job in Vietnam or Afghanistan and there may be a Presidential election to win.

All speculative questions/points but we have never had it so good.

Ok then how about this idea, Russia and China together, that’s what I was hinting at, because it’s a possibility.

They'll find most of the former Warsaw pact countries a rather harder obstacle than they think, their memories of soviet occupation will not be fond.

I’d imagine it would just be a fight to a draw. China would have a challenge on their hand with Japan who would certainly side with the West and are often understimated but are the 3rd biggest economy on Earth and the 5th most powerful military

Hypothetical of course as it’s not going to happen but Japan would keep China occupied for a while

Wonder what public opinion in Russia is like (I mean genuinely, not what Russia tells us it is). I know for the elderly the USSR was some glorious time of power and influence which many will look back fondly upon, but for the younger generation who have never grown up in that world there can't be much desire for their country to start invading other ones surely?

Rumour has it putin, is not popular with the younger generation, he’s been In power for them, since 1999 remember, a lot of them will see him like Joe Stalin, which is no doubt who he’s trying to by pass.
