This article was written in the Spring but will give you an idea of public opinion in Russia. The Moscow Times is a US version of Russia Today but you'll find both are happy to accept polling from the Levada Center as being independent.

This diplomatic crisis is not just about Ukraine - that's a fairly straight forward fix which involves getting Ukraine to follow through on the Minsk II agreement giving autonomy to Luhansk and Donbass.

Cheers mate...I remember leaving for work when "Bay of Pigs" was the standoff of it's day. We were'nt a tactile family, but remember kissing my mum on the cheek when saying goodbye...first and only time, they were proper scary times :eek:

I lived through the 1962 Cuba crisis as well. My mam, dad and I slept in the same bed. Absolutely terrified. My dad went sick from the pit for several days as he wasn’t going to leave my mam on her own.

I think Kennedy and Khrushchev showed they were great men unlike the warmongering idiots of the Daily Express and Daily Mail of those days ( and now!) and the people who follow them like some on this board.

Everyone was scared. There was big absenteeism in all the coalfields, including Durham. All the kids in schools were terrified but, surprisingly, there wasn’t much absenteeism. We talked about the crisis incessantly as the Soviet vessels moved closer to Cuba and we all wondered whether we would be here the next morning.

It was horrendous. Not something I would want to live through again.

The Kevin Costner film “13 Days” is a gripping and largely accurate portrayal of the atmosphere in the White House as Kennedy holds fast against the “nuke ‘em” brigade.

It should be shown to young people as should “Threads” (about Sheffield being hit by a hydrogen bomb) and “The War Game”, also about the effects of nuclear attack on the UK.

There are no “Fun Facts” associated with this.
