Was it really?
That might make more sense.

The stuff I read about the piracy claim being settled all mentioned that 'a big obstacle for the NUFC takeover had been cleared', and it went through days later.

If there were other drivers apart from the takeover that might explain dropping a billion without a plan in place for the takeover.
It does to me as well. I've been thinking there's no way they would pay a billion to just buy the mags there has to be something else and it has to be profitable

Is he a genuine Saudi? Remember the fake sheikh? Maybe investigating sportswashing at a grass roots level?

The repeated use of Inshallah gives it away for me. Wraith and his cronies will be thinking wtf when they cannot get a pint in Riyadh.

They had to solve the piracy issue and it was more than about the mags. There is the Arab Cup starting on 30/11 and Bein have the rights.

Then there is the small matter of the WC taking place next year. It was beyond comprehension that they didn't (temporarily) settle their differences with that about to take place.

In addition, the mags were under valued at around 2+ of revenue. Top teams are valued at 6x revenue. Interestingly, in the MLS with no relegation, valuations are 10+ x revenue, so you can see the ESL angle. IMHO they will tart the place up, grow revenue and sell on within 5 years.

It doesn’t have to be profitable as such in monetary terms. Agree though, they’re not spending that amount simply to own the mags. Sportwashing all the way

Newcastle need a plan that can firefight in the short-term and lay the foundations for long-term success at the same time.

At the moment they do not appear to have either.

So they don’t want Howe but have agreed a deal in principle for him to come?

Makes sense. (About as much as Mag In peace saying it’s MBSs money that was used to buy the club but he doesn’t have anything to do with the takeover)
