You just stick to changing the narrative to fit. Freedom to build a team changed to freedom to spend within a budget? That’s not really the same thing is it? And we all know that you lot don’t like spending within budgets, all you do is scream on about net spend
I said "If he'd been given the kind of freedom to build the squad he wanted (as he is at Everton)". I don't know how you couldn't understand that meant freedom within a budget?

The fact is he wasn't very good and if he'd done better he wouldn't be out of a job so quickly.
It's weird why he always gets compared to Benitez. I don't think I recall any other managers constantly getting compared to their predecessor over two years later. But that's the conversation, Bruce vs Benitez. Was never Benitez vs McClaren, or Pardew vs Hughton.
You know the reason for that. Never before has a manager with such an average record who played utterly turgid football for a group of fans that demand to be entertained, been so idolised. He was idolised because he was a big name who had managed truly big clubs and won things. It made you feel big. On a par with the clubs he’d managed previously. Having him as manager satisfied the neediness that is endemic in your support.

He hasn't though. He had £2m to work with this summer because of FFP. Benitez is working under more constraints than he ever has in his career.

I don't think it's as easy as that. I think;
  • Everyone (pretty much) wanted Ashley gone.
  • Loads would want riches.
  • Some don't care where the money comes from.

I think all 3 issues impacted the answer to the question "Are you in favour of the Saudi takeover? Yes/No"

I think if the Saudis had come in for you after Short there'd be great swathes of your support who'd be in favour of the takeover.
We had a similar situation with the Dell situation. I don’t recall anywhere near the level of arsehole behaviour.

Really, how is the Saudi's ploughing millions of pounds into horse racing over here any different to the Saudi's ploughing millions of pounds into football?

Interesting read on the Saudi Cup -

They own horses and pay a fee to enter them into races. Everyone involved from trainers to stable boys and girls are paid employees. No one is buying shirts with the owners name on or associating themselves with a particular horse. The owners are not receiving any cash (directly) from people watching races live or on TV or betting on the horses. In comparison Newcastle fans will be buying shirts, likely emblazoned with Saudia or Aramco and spending 100's of pounds on season tickets.

Happy to hear your view but try and back it up with facts rather than fishing bait.

It isn't. I don't bet on horse racing or follow the mags.

mag at work just told me the owners didn't mind the tea towels etc it was just woke MPs locally that forced it and it was ok when City did it

they just divvent undastand how the KSA works
funny that cos the Saudis just get offended at everything else other than wearing tea towels on your head and your best table cloth held around your waist by curtain tie backs

Rafa 'got' you. You beatified him. Bruce was on a loss from day one.

Any manager with as poor a record as Bruce coming in would not have been greeted with excitement.
Similar to signing a new player, if he's been good elsewhere fans will be excited to see what he does at their club. If he's been crap wherever he's been fans aren't going to be too excited at the arrival.

Nobody wanted Bruce to fail, but he was expected to come in and be how he was. Players out of position, always playing the victim, full of excuses, a pattern seen at all his clubs. Isn't there a Sunderland website dedicated to Steve's excuses?
I said at the time i hoped he would do much better than Benitez but didn't think he would.

The bad football, having a go at the fans, the press, the horrendous injury record (a feature at all his clubs), throwing players under the bus...
You know what he's like as a Sunderland fan, he's a dick and a poor manager.
It's right that he was sacked. If takeover hadn't happened and he'd still been sacked it would have been justified.

i agree and I’ve been consistently vocal about this.
Benitez probably marginally did a better job despite playing a role in a relegation but Bruce absolutely did nowhere near as bad a job as people make out.
Benitez did a steady ok job, nothing more.
Aye, agree with that. I don't expect your fans to like Bruce, my dad's a mag and I've had enough chats with him after matches where he's said he's been nearly bored to sleep, but again benitez was hardly exciting. The approach to cup games was shit like, so that's another valid criticism of Bruce. In terms of spend, I'm sure a lot of his spend was joelinton, and iirc that was soon after he came in so probably wasn't "his" signing. I think he had relatively little to work with and did a mediocre but acceptable job. Right that he left with or without a takeover but I don't think he deserves the criticism he's had. Equally benitez did a decent job and had the pedigree where you knew he might be able to make you progress (which Bruce never had) but his job at NUFC was just decent, nothing more, and if I was a mag I certainly wouldn't want him back, I'd want a bit more entertainment after years of him and Bruce

Is the current squad the worst the mags have had in the PL era... if so what can't any incoming manager do in the time between now and when the transfer window opens .
