The Pep myth

Give the dippers the same spending power as City and pep would get no where near the title, klopp would have it wrapped up by Christmas.

I’m sure I’ll get tons of abuse for this, so I’ll caveat in advance. He’s clearly a top coach. This is more a “is he as good as he thinks he is?” post

it’s now 10 years since he won the champions league. Despite having pretty much unlimited money at City and coaching Bayern, one of the biggest clubs on the planet

He got somewhat fortunate with Barca as he inherited arguably the best player ever in his prime

look at his City numbers. He’s been great domestically. But he should be when you look at what he’s bought. The transfer fees are from memory, so tell me I’m wrong

Ederson £35m (one of the highest fees ever at the time)
Walker £50m
Mendy £50m (even without the news he’s been crap)
Cancelo £40m+
Dias, Stones, Ake, Laporte at a combined £220m ish
Rodri £60m
De Bruyne £57m
Silva £35m
Jesus £27m
Mahrez £60m
Grealish £100m
Torres £25m

there will be more. Probably only one looks a shocker, but given the money surely he has to win more?

who has he sold at a profit? Sane?

who has he developed? Foden?

I’ll get pelters, but 10 years since a CL. With that money. He’s not the genius he thinks he is?

Jesus wept man

you say "team he inherited" as though that dinishes the achievement..but actually it enhances it...as it means he madea team better that was doing less well under a different mnager..

PSG have a lot further to come from to win a champs league than city did when pep took over..

its reasonable to ask if Pep has over achieved at any club?

How many clubs that he's managed has he improved?

In regards to money, they’re second in the “net spend per trophy” table

Plenty can compete with them financially though, and do any of them play as good football as Man City?
I’m not sure “plenty” can compete with Man City, there’s maybe 5 teams in the world which are on a similar level in terms of “pull” and available financials

Almost seems to try to out-do himself tactically at times.

Prime example being the Champions League final last year with plenty of reputable sources reporting that no-one inside the club including the players agreed with him nor had any idea why he chose to set up the way he did.

I had presumed the OP was a wind up but I’ve just read the thread and to my amazement there’s posters in agreement.

People forget just how much he improved Man City, and how he created one of the all time great Barcelona teams, and even took an outstanding Bayern to a new level.
You sack him and who do you replace him with where you could say aye, they've clearly upgraded there like. The fact the answer is no-one tells you all you need to know.

It's an Adrian Durham thread. "Pep, is he all that?"

Stay tuned cause after the break we will be discussing if Man Utd should have kicked on after their 1992 title win.
