The Pep myth

Tin hat on. Likely have to upgrade to steel as I live in Catalonia. Everywhere he's been he's had an easy ride. Barça with Messi, Xavi and Iniesta in their prime. Bayern in a 1 team league (at least at the time) and City with their infinite amount of money. Is he a good coach? Yes, he's excellent, that's obvious from the improvement in city's English players, but he's had it easy. Especially at City.

I'll now go hide in my bunker.

Yeah he does. It’s more given the money and positions he has had, surely he should be delivering more in the CL?
Money doesn't win anything. PSG have probably spent more, but won it once. Tuchel couldn't win at PSG then won it with Chelsea with a team he inherited,There's a lot of good teams and coaches in Europe. I do sometimes think a bit of luck goes a long way when margins are fine.

This will almost sound like I'm making excuses for him, but I don't just see it as what he's won. A bit like Messi, who doesn't have the most honours to his name but he's the best player I've ever seen.

Guardiola's teams holistically are probably the best I've seen. I take more from watching a Guardiola team than I do any other.

I can’t imagine where Man City would be without him regardless.

I see the point but I always think arguments like this depend on this idea of him overspending like somebody else in his position wouldn’t have done this. He’s arguably made some of the worst decisions in major games (see CL final last season.)

Saying that, this Man City team play some of the best football I’ve ever seen in the premier league so as far as I’m concerned even though he may not have achieved what is expected he has revolutionised a side with little notable history before this.

I mean, Messi has 10 leagues and 4 CLs

Care to name all those games, and all the games he hasn't been 'out thought'?

As I said earlier, he's up against the other best managers, coaches and players in the world too.
He was out-thought in last years CL final, i remember a couple of semi finals at Bayern similarly - I would hazard a guess that he has spent more in the last ten years than any other coach and come up short. Hes a good coach but the genius tag is not deserved imo

I’m sure I’ll get tons of abuse for this, so I’ll caveat in advance. He’s clearly a top coach. This is more a “is he as good as he thinks he is?” post

it’s now 10 years since he won the champions league. Despite having pretty much unlimited money at City and coaching Bayern, one of the biggest clubs on the planet

He got somewhat fortunate with Barca as he inherited arguably the best player ever in his prime

look at his City numbers. He’s been great domestically. But he should be when you look at what he’s bought. The transfer fees are from memory, so tell me I’m wrong

Ederson £35m (one of the highest fees ever at the time)
Walker £50m
Mendy £50m (even without the news he’s been crap)
Cancelo £40m+
Dias, Stones, Ake, Laporte at a combined £220m ish
Rodri £60m
De Bruyne £57m
Silva £35m
Jesus £27m
Mahrez £60m
Grealish £100m
Torres £25m

there will be more. Probably only one looks a shocker, but given the money surely he has to win more?

who has he sold at a profit? Sane?

who has he developed? Foden?

I’ll get pelters, but 10 years since a CL. With that money. He’s not the genius he thinks he is?
TBF he'll have little to do with the transfer fees. The selling clubs obviously know about Man City's ridiculous resources.

He makes football more enjoyable. I couldn't care less about some comments about a second team.
More bothered about Sunderland and the continuance of league football. He is a great manager of rich clubs and has had a great managerial career based on the most exciting tactics. He has made statements that sound too much like European Super League entitlement and that is why I am less than impressed with him. All about opinions and values, I confess to only bothering much about Sunderland and Celtic games so am not too bothered by the Premier League.

Brilliant manager, but i think Klopp is better.

Both can be absolute wankers mind but the job Klopp has done at Liverpool is literally mind boggling.

you say "team he inherited" as though that dinishes the achievement..but actually it enhances it...as it means he madea team better that was doing less well under a different mnager..

PSG have a lot further to come from to win a champs league than city did when pep took over..

its reasonable to ask if Pep has over achieved at any club?
