Not really a series defeat though, still 2-1 with a test to play.
They had a chance to make history but just gonna be remembered for the wrong reasons now.
Can’t deny the IPL money is good but won’t they be playing another in 6 months? Whole situation is odd.

They were winning 2-1 when the final match was cancelled. Therefore if it isn't rescheduled, they win the series 2-1. You're clutching at straws.

Again, they're saying it's a mutual decision not a forfeit. The record will say India won the series. You can thank the ECB for that.

Perhaps. It will be remembered for the wrong reasons though, they have refused to play.

If England take a series lead in the ashes can they refuse to play the remaining tests and win the ashes?

Well it depends, if the official result is 2-1 to India then Kohli can claim victory.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) along with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) have jointly decided to call off the 5th Test Match scheduled at Manchester in ongoing India’s tour of England 2021.

The BCCI and ECB held several rounds of discussion to find a way to play the Test Match, however, the outbreak of Covid-19 in the Indian team contingent forced the decision of calling off the Old Trafford Test Match.

In lieu of the strong relationship between BCCI and ECB, the BCCI has offered to ECB a rescheduling of the cancelled Test match. Both the Boards will work towards finding a window to reschedule this Test match.

The BCCI has always maintained that the safety and well-being of the players is of paramount importance and there will be no comprise on that aspect.

The BCCI would like to thank the ECB for their co-operation and understanding in these trying times. We would like to apologise to the fans for not being able to complete an enthralling series.

Sadly, I agree. As much as we may say ‘they didn’t’ I reckon it’s almost certain going to say 2-1 in the record books
 
Surely if India forfeited it then its a draw - but clearly it's being stated they didn't so the match being cancelled is exactly the same as it being washed out. So a 2-1 victory to India, they can't 'claim' victory as they don't need to - unless the fufth test is rearranged they won the series 2-1.

The Indian players forfeited the game to protect their IPL money - the series is therefore either drawn or void. If the ECB acquiesce in any other outcome they'll out themselves as being even bigger tools than we already imagine them to be. And India have passed up glory for cash. Maybe anyone would, but there it is.
 
Let’s be honest India would probably be 3-1 up without the rain at Trent Bridge, however still really disappointed this match didn’t go ahead.
