F1 2021

Nothing to do with the French organisers wanting to ensue the professor got the win.

apparently Schumacher won in heavy rain in ‘97 for a special win, but I’ve no memory of it... although I do remember the year before when I think only 3 cars finished? Panis in the ligier taking the flag...
Jean marie Balestre - one of the very few humans I really hated.

Check out some of the old driver pre race meetings he was unbelievable as the head of the FIA.

He hated Ayrton.

I've seen some of the footage you mention - it was unbelievable

How he got away with some of the partisan stunts he pulled...

Well just finished watching the Spanish GP (I can't see a race in it's entirety. I must rely on the record button or online steaming of full races) and I must say I have never seen a hollower win in all my life.

I felt for Max. Lead the race the whole time and about 4 or 3 from the end Lewis right at the death overtakes to win purely because his tires had better longevity than Max's. Purely because Max's wasn't going to last the rest of the race. Has Lewis EVER fought other drivers for it or has he relied on his tires to give him it? Is that what all of his titles have been about? Pleeeeeaaaasssssseee!

Instead of the one big black round thing (circuit) F1 seems to be won and lost on the four small black round things (tires) and in the pits. That's where the action is. That's where the race is conducted. The entire time Ted and Mark were talking about the life of Max's tires or Lewis' tires and what they must do for them to win. Most of the excitement is based around waiting with baited breath wondering if one drivers's tires are going to last and whether or not his rival ought to do a one stop or a two stop.

However I am still glad I tuned in. On lap 59 or 60 I think it was there was a small group from Alonso to Russell in the middle who were together. That's when the race came alive for me.

OK I get it. In F1 tires and the various compounds and lifespan's are the best thing since the invention of the bread slicer. Can we please focus on actual racing now?

one mans innovation is another mans cheating...
If someone thinks they're cheating, they report it and it gets checked.
Then if there is a rule broken, a suitable punishment is dished out.

That's how its always been.

*Except for Ferrari of course, in which case there's no outcome and no punishment.

Aye RB have a track record for “innovative” design features but then again everybody cheats don’t they!
I think there should be unrestricted design features. We have a template for teams from Mercedes down to HAAS to work on and it will be then up to the boffins with their PC's in the team HQ to then build the best, fast competitive car around that. It will make for a way more exciting and juicier race I think. Wasn't F1 like that in the 60's and 70's? Been looking on Google. Remember the Tyrell P34? Or the Brabham BT46B?

That will just automatically gift the race to the team with the deepest pockets which flies in the face of everything you just wrote in your earlier posts. The whole point of “Formula” racing is precisely that, there are specs to which the cars must comply. The lower formula races give you the racing buzz you’re looking for, F1 is what it is, for better or worse.

Well that’s a load of shite. Lewis stopped once more and still made the time back and yeah tire management is a big part and always has been !!

F1 is all about strategy and great team planning, Merc had the two stopped planned for the very beginning of the weekend and Red Bull should have seen it coming.
I don’t feel sorry for Max, his tyres didn’t last for a couple of reasons. First, his car is worse on tyres than the Merc and secondly Lewis pushed him to an insane pace in the first stint Max was destroying his tyres. That was the best I’ve been able to see a car follow another one for a long time. End of the day the fastest driver/ team won.

Schumacher was almost 30 seconds ahead of the rest of the field after 8 laps in 97

Lewis was just faster, and showed that being behind opens up all kinds of options.
Options that Red Bull have failed to take advantage of on many occasions.

Lewis was able to close 24seconds and then overtake. His tyres were only 12 laps newer, and he was hitting them 1s per lap harder than Max for 20 laps and still had enough to easily overtake.

If 2 stopping was so much faster, Max could have done it the lap after Lewis did. But they decided he wouldn't be able to keep the lead AND wouldn't be able to pass. Its not rocket science, Lewis was faster.

Red bull could never have two stopped until late in the race. Merc was the only one of the top teams to hold back a second set off mediums for the race. All Max had left was a set of softs that wouldn’t have made it until the end of the race. Still agree Lewis was the faster driver though

Lewis put scrubbed mediums on to finish the race with.
Its all strategy. Mercs had all the options because they were faster. Or at least, one of them was

Considering Max was a sitting duck, maybe he could have blasted his tyres and did a 15 lap stint on softs and tried to overtake Lewis at the end? Better than just hoping.

True he did but as this tweet shows the rest of the teams had handed back their other set of mediums during practices. Merc knew it wasnt an easy one stop from 2019 so handed a set of softs back instead in favour of another race tyre.

I just can’t believe Red Bull didn’t see it coming, the exact same situation happened to them at Hungary.

They even called the Hungary reference when Lewis pitted, so were obviously aware of the implications.

As pointed out by others tyre strategy is a big part of F1, it’s not sprint racing.
as for Lewis only winning because of tyres? See race 1 of this season. According to some his wins are only down to the car...

This is certainly the case, for certain people every single one of his 98 wins has an excuse, best car/strategy call/opponent error, never just that he was the in the best team-driver combo that day.

Since the dawn of time in F1, the best drivers end up in the best cars, then proceed to show everyone why they're the best.
