New Music Releases Thread

My albums of the week are by the Big Brave and Simon Goff

Dinosaur Jr was fine, but nothing more. Probably prefer Mascis solo work of recent years

Field Music sounds like Field Music. They’re a band that just don’t stick with me, no matter how many times I try

So, my weekly digest:

Alan Vega: very good. In turns sinister and beautiful. As @mad cyril says, a worthy addition to his output.
Todd Snider: sort of soulful, funky, bluesy Americana, if that makes sense. Reminds me a little of North Mississippi Allstars. Something of a concept album about setting up your own church, I think.
Roger Fakhr: a lost 70s album type thing. He's a Lebanese/French singer-songwriter who sounds very early to middle 70s Laurel Canyon. Some of this is exceptional.
Grasscut: came out a couple of months ago. They always get called post-rock, when they p[robably aren't. More ambient electronica with soft vocals over the top. It's good, not sure it's as good as some of their earlier releases.
Art d'Ecco: poppy, witty glam rock. Easy to listen to, can imagine them being fun live.
Dinosaur Jr.: I think I'm with others who've posted about it. It's good but not spactacularly good. The Lou Barlow songs are better than the J Mascis songs.
Black Twig Pickers: folky hoe down stuff, expertly played by top musicians. Again, sound like fun live.
Toumani Diabate and the LSO: lovely, beautiful and delicate. An excellent listen.
Field Music: I've enjoyed this on early listens more than a lot of Field Music albums. Some of it is maybe a bit more straightforward and some a bit XTCish.
IKOQWE: a mix of traditional Angolan music and old school hip-hop (admittedly with a strong bias to the latter). Worth a listen!
E.R. Jurken: ostensibly a guitar based singer-songwriter but some of this reminds me of Sparks and a lot of the late, much missed Norwegian genius St Thomas. Exceptional and highly recommended.
Wasuremono: 80s influenced pop/post-punk hybrid. The harmony vocals remind me of Bananarama at times, in a good way (pre-SAW, Cruel Summer/Rough Justice type thing). The album that most made me want to play it again immediately this week.
Elijah Wolf: I like this. @James has the references spot on (I think it's produced by someone who has produced Kevin Morby in the past). Laidback indie rock essentially.
Lady Dan: Americana, reminiscent of Jenny Lewis and/or Neko Case when at it's best but sometimes it drifts a little into MOR. Decent enough.

Album of the week:
a toss up between E.R. Jurken and Wasuremono. I'd probably slightly favour the latter on immediateplayagainability. Todd Snider also pretty terrific and Toumani's album is beautiful from start to finish.

Sonic Boom's Almost Nothing Is Nearly Enough came out on Friday. Will give it a proper listen at the weekend. It's remixed songs from last year's well received All Things Being Equal album, 2 of which were only on the Japanese release. Will be taking care to play it at the right speed.

It’s all about the Dropkick Murphys for me this week.

Might give Guided by Voices, Sweeney/Billy and TF a go as well.

Single but they’ve done a KEXP session I’ll link below with a few new songs. Dethroned sounds great. BCNR sax player joined them.

Have you heard it? They're taking the piss aren't they? They've got to be?

I like it, I prefer the other single. Have a watch of the KEXP session above it sounds better. Think it will work with a full listen of the album.
