CC :: Durham v Derbyshire

Ha’way the lads. Nice and overcast this morning :)

To @smoker and @GordonMuchallNo1Fan - I’m minded to believe that the club (Franklin/Borthwick) have got the selection right at present.....? I certainly don’t think there’s any controversy there.

Eckersley has been relieved of the gloves and it’s paid dividends for his batting, they clearly think that he’s the best option for number 6 in a team which historically has been short of runs. Poynter hasn’t pulled up any trees yet this season batting wise but his glove work has been decent.

I think in a comparison or a fight for selection with any other member of the squad, Eckersley and Poynter in this example have more pedigree based on their body of work than the likes of Clark, Jones, Dickson, etc. The club feel those two are the best bet for numbers 6 and 7 and up to now, I can’t see how anyone can really criticise that?

As for Trevaskis, as much as I’d love to see him come in and flourish, he’s got no real pedigree in red ball cricket with either bat or ball to suggest he’s worthy of slotting in above 8. Durham clearly like the dynamic of having bowlers who can bat, it’s long since been the strategy for producing young players, it’s why we have produced a ridiculous (in a good way) amount of bowlers who can hold a bat and contribute runs. It’s probably a product of having years of pitches where the average first innings score is sub-200 and therefore needing lads down the order to score runs but I’m digressing here.

Unfortunately for us, we don’t have a ‘premier’ finger spinner, it’s been mentioned time and time again throughout our history in fact as an area of real stress and difficulty in both the bowling of spin and the playing of it. You can count on one hand the number of truly great spin bowlers we’ve had since 1993.

Unfortunately that doesn’t look like sorting itself anytime soon. Irony is, Ryan Pringle would probably be a decent option to come in 7/8 and give Eckersley the gloves back , but he’s long gone.
Poynter is a never has been never will be, it looks like we're giving him games just because he gave up Ireland for us.

Ned's first season with us in 2019 he averaged 40.00 with the bat while keeping, which is more than enough.

Trev has some runs and wickets in all formats, he averaged 25 in 2019 with the bat in the CC. They trust him in white ball so why not red, he's only played 11 FC matches. Has to worth a run in the team IMO, every time I've seen him I've thought he had something about him.

Because for one, the white ball and the red ball are completely different. For a number of reasons. I’m not anti-Trevaskis, I’m merely saying I can understand why he isn’t being picked in the current lineup.

If there were solid options in the lower middle order I wouldn't question it either, but Poynter is never an answer to any question.

In previous seasons you could get away with four seamers and a medium pacer but the wickets are bone dry this season with bags of wickets for spinners already. Not having a spin option will be costly. Borthwick should be capable of this role but he's looked poor.

Q. Who was the last Durham contracted player to keep wicket for Ireland in an ODI?

Also when you use your allocation of overseas players on specialist batsmen it means you can't sign that bowler who can make the difference to your domestic bowling attack.

So frustrating that in spells this season we’ve played some fantastic cricket yet whenever we have the chance to go for the jugular and take the game away from sides fully we let them off the hook.

Another career best batting performance against Durham :(

He’s never really held that role at any point in his career though, wherever he’s been.
Who’d you have at 7?

Stuff like that boils down to captaincy and selection as previously discussed. Badger seems to let games drift. He bowled Carse too long at Essex and he picked up an injury, doesn't fancy himself to bowl, no other options other than to bang away with same old RFM.

Fully fit, team would be:

Lees
Bancroft
Borthwick*
Bedingham
Burnham
Eckersley+
Coughlin/Carse
Trevaskis/Thomson/new off spinner
Raine
Salisbury
Rushworth

Obvious innit

Sorry, but I’ve got to pull this up - Carse turned his ankle on a foot-hole, nowt to do with bowling ‘too long’.

Moot point, if he hadn't bowled so many overs he would have been less likely to stick his foot in a 'foothole' or break down as a result of it. SB admitted on County Natters that Carse is an impact bowler yet has had him bowling 5 over spells. He bowled more bal,s than all our other bowlers in their second innings. I would have him bowl 2-3 over spells tops, one of those spells with the new ball. Salisbury needs to do more heavy lifting, bowling a tighter line with an older ball. Also the aforementioned off spinner at the other end to Raine if stuff isn't happening off the seam.
