Best Western Film Ever

I don't think I will ever tire of watching 'Josey Wales' has humour and a realism about it. Also The Revenant, I like the attention to detail and realism of the world it depicts. Love 'Eagle's Wing', didn't get any commercial success and fairly mixed reviews, particularly in the US. Not a lot of dialogue but interesting story-line, to me anyway. Good cast; Charlie Sheen, Sam Waterston (wonder if he gets any hassle these days for playing a Native American?), Caroline Langrishe, Harvey Keitel plus others.

Have you read 'The Revenant' novel? I was enthralled, kept referring to the detailed map in the appendix every couple of pages!

Leonard is terrific.
I’ve got the lot. Nivver quite got away with the westerns though.
Tarantino bought the film rights to every available Leonard novel with his first bunch of Reservoir Dogs money. RD has a few scenes “borrowed” from Leonard books. He’s said he’ll produce em all once he’s done with directing. I just hope he has the rights to Swag, Pagan Babies and Bandits.

His sons ok, sort of Leonard lite without the off the wall weirdness. He was supposed to be finishing off his old mans last one that was half done when he died.
No votes for Little Big Man?
Hoffman used to live around the corner from an old local of mine when he was ower here. He’d get in there occasionally. My marra used to quiz him on Little Big Man as he loved it and had watched it loads of times. Hoffman found it hilarious as it was a film most people had nivver even heard of.

I owned most at one point, before my life turned chaotic. Think my favourite was 'Tishomingo Blues', although 'Get Shorty' is brilliant. Loads of them are great. I wasn't the biggest fan of 'Rum Punch', which ironically is probably the biggest hit of the film adaptations.

I vaguely remember something about the Tarantino fact you mention. Someone obviously beat him to the punch with 'Get Shorty'.

Burt Reynolds bought the rights to a few back in the 80s when he was big. Only filmed “Stick” which he turned into a shite wisecracking Reynolds vehicle. It bombed. Hopefully he’ll sell em to Tarantino. I wouldn’t be surprised if Swag wasn’t one of en as it’s the Stick character a few years later iirc.

Leonard let the studios talk him into writing Be Cool as a Shorty follow up. It shows. He said nivver again.

I just remembered that the Devito character in Shorty was based on a couple of meetings Leonard had with Hoffman. Auld Dustys my Kevin Bacon six removes from whatever it was called “in”.

Yes I have, enjoyed it, the fur trapping period of North American history is both fascinating and sobering, before everywhere had been explored/mapped and before the West started to open up to settlers. 'Epic Wanderer' by David Thompson is a good read if you like this sort of thing. Currently reading 'A Life Wild and Perilous' by Robert Utley, describing the lives of the first (recorded) mountain men - their resourcefulness and toughness to survive in that environment is unreal, including interactions with Native Americans/First Nations which was often brutal.

For me it's a toss up between Once Upon a Time in the West and The Outlaw Josey Wales

Love the western genre.

City slickers 2, legend of curly's gold, I think is the best.

Still haven't seen once upon a time in the west. I want to it just Never seems to be on anything.

For me it's a toss up between the good the bad and the ugly and the wild bunch love them both.
Not mentioned yet so I'll hoy it up but butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid is decent.

I like 99% of what has been mentioned and different types of westerns all of them.

I like She Wore a Yellow Ribbon and all John Ford stuff.

The best one for me has already been mentioned - The Oxbow Incident.

Pagan Babies done by Tarantino is a film I would very much like to see.

I’m still of the opinion that the first few paragraphs was an attempt to show literary types that anyone can write their sort of nonsense. Then he got down to what real people want to really read....a crackin story.

I gave my first copy of Swag away to a kid who at the age of 21 had nivver read a book in his life. He loved it. Hooked on the first two pages. Given half a dozen away since to similar kids and only one didn’t love it. Turned out he could barely read.
The books force fed to kids at school define their attitudes to reading for life. Get em hooked first then hope they’ll move on to the stuff the education authorities want em to read. EL may not quite fit the bill mind.

There was a good John Ford doc on sky arts last neet. Nivver realised he learnt under his older brother who worked in silent movies. Also the studios loved him becos he worked quickly, and he worked quickly because he was banned from drinking when filming so the sooner he was finished the sooner he got back on it!
