SMB Tennis thread (note there is a specific Wimbledon 22 thread)

Anyone know who the commentators are on Eurosport for the Nadal v Tsitsipas match?
It was Simon Reed with Frew McMillan. Took a bit finding but came across this website icdb.tv - Internet Commentators Database - Stefanos Tsitsipas v Rafael Nadal which lists commentators on the various channels.

Frew is now 78 years old and still going strong. Those of a certain age will remember him mainly for the fact that he had a double handed forehand as well as backhand. His main success was in the doubles with Bob Hewitt

Excellent, thanks. Frew hadn't shown up on any of the links I'd found but we were sure we had heard his name a couple of times near the end! I remember him always wearing a white flat cap in the days when doubles had a far higher profile than it does now.

Anyway, I think those 2 make a good commentary team.

I can't remember the last time I saw Rafa get that tight on the big points. That volley from Nadal into the net at deuce in the last game... wouldn't even normally say he'd make that 99/100, it'd be 100/100.

Great news that we get to see this though

Nadal wont win another slam that isn't on clay, next gen have caught him up on hardcourt now and he isn't good enough to win Wimbledon anymore.

Guarentee Medvedev celebrates wildly if he beats Tsitispas.
Rafa got tight in the tie-break, those last shots were a combination of tightness and fatigue for me.

I wouldnt rule him out just yet, Wimbledon he's got a great chance, US Open is his most successful slam away from Paris.
If the likes of Rublev, Berettini etc can join zverev, thiem, medvedev, tsitispas in pushing the top 2 in slams then Rafa will struggle to go through 3/4 long hard matches in a row.

Fully deserved. Was a passenger in the first 2 sets, but from the start of set 3 he's been a different player.
Boom
What a win
Fantastic win, Rafa just doesnt lose from 2 sets up (only federer and fognini have done it and only once in slams), Tsitispis will struggle to play as well as those last two hours for the rest of his career, was smashing everything and painting the lines with winners left right and centre.
His serve looks like it has gone up another level, Federereqsue at times with a 4 ace service game.
Cant wait for the 'bullshit Russian v Tsitispas' semi, whomever wins i hope they take the title!

Love to see Tsitsipas win it, or failing that anyone but Djokovic . Can't see it though, Novak is playing well despite having a slight injury, and I reckon Medvedev v Tsitsipas will go at least 4 sets.

Whereas I think Djokovic will probably stroll through tomorrow and be fresh as a daisy. Mind you, he's never played Karatsev and he's a real wildcard of a SF player. I don't think adrenaline of the occasion and aggression will be enough to take out Djokovic, he's going to play substantially better in that match, than any other match in his entire career, and hope that Djokovic gets himself in a strop.

He will likely have to beat one of if not both Federer and Djokovic to win Wimbledon and I Just don't think he can beat them anymore in slams unless it is on clay, has a good record at the US but I think Thiem, Medvedev, Zverev etc are only going to get better as he declines due to his age.

On a bad year he might normally miss one overhead through the full season and he managed to miss two in one tie break today. I genuinely don't think I've seen him do anything like that before.

If Tsitsipas manages to come from two sets down against Rafa, beat Medvedev and then Djokovic then I think it's only fair to cancel the other Slams this year and just give all the titles to him. Love to see it as well like you say.

Djokovic will have everything crossed that Tsitsipas wins against Medvedev I'd imagine.

The powers of Recovery from Djokovic are unreal, coming back from a career threatening stomach injury to fight through the immense pain that hindered his movement in no way whatsoever and win 4 matches in a row in stifling heat.
Get this man a medal for bravery :lol::eek::rolleyes:

other news 8.30 tomorrow Med v Tsitispas, hoping for a high quality 3 setter so whomever wins isnt too tired before the final.

glad to see Osaka won, some speculation that might be Williams last appearance in Oz, turning 40 this year and apparently wants another child.

Williams was gutted at her presser, walked out in tears. She's been finished as a Grand Slam winner for a couple of years now tbh, she can barely run. She's easy to predict and any top 10 women's player with a bit speed and tactical awareness should dispatch Williams easily - just make her run.

I can't believe the relatively decent odds for Williams to win today. I bet on Osaka, it was like printing money.

Tbf Wiliams has been moving better here than she has in years and was noticeably slimmer from her last appearance in the US open, her matches with Sabalenka and Halep were great, she will be gutted to be beaten by Osaka who only had a 36% 1st serve in the 1st set, suggests it was her worst performance of the tournament.
Would not rule her out for Wimbledon or US if she gets a good draw

Serena can definitely still win a Slam. If Sofia Kenin just reached two Slam finals last year then Serena can probably still win about another ten. Just slapped Halep off court with ease straight after beating Sabalenka. Was unlucky to lose a high quality match to Azarenka in New York in the semis at the end of last year and probably only lost because of the injury. It's not like her reaching the back end of a Slam is becoming less and less likely, don't think anyone has reached more finals than her since she came back in 2018.

I'd say there's only Barty and Osaka who can claim to be better right now than Serena.

I don't think she'll win another, unless she gets a flukey draw. Over the last few years, Serena has been knocked out of most Grand Slams before the final (sometimes absolutely nowhere near the final), and when she has reached finals she has been demolished in straight sets.

She has reached 4 finals in 12 Grand Slams since she returned, and she hasn't even won a SET yet. She hasn't won a Grand Slam in over 4 years, and hasn't reached a final since Wimbledon 2019 - where she was absolutely walloped in 55 minutes, 6-2, 6-2.

She might be able to beat good players in a one-off match, but she can't do it consistently enough to be a serious threat to Grand Slam titles. Now that she's no longer protected by rank, she gets tougher draws, and that means early exits and huge effort just to get to the latter stages. I also there are certain players that she just can't really beat when it matters - Osaka being one of them. Even on a bad day, she's just better than Williams now, and she's never lost a Semi Final or a Final.

Maybe I'm being a tad harsh/premature, but I just think Williams is a bit overrated now and there are now younger, faster, stronger and technically better tennis players.

Hoping for a Medvedev win here , liked him ever since he was winding the crowd up at the US open in 2019, also think he has the best chance of beating Djokovic .

Some quality tennis from Medvedev, hope he brings that level Sunday as he just might win (i hope).
Great tournament from Tsitispas, that win over Nadal will give him plenty of confidence moving forward.

Unfortunately, like the Nadal match, it took him 2 sets down to actually get going.

Osaka's very much the real deal but it hurts my brain that she's already got double the amount of Slams that Victoria Azarenka has.

What are we all thinking for the men's then? It seems to have gone massively under the radar that Novak Djokovic has played like an absolute bag of shite in nearly every big match he's played in since he demolished Rafa here in 2019.

Poor against Rafa and nearly chucked it away against Tsitsipas in Paris 2020, quite poor against Thiem after he lost the plot in Melbourne 2020, poor against Federer apart from the final set and poor against Bautista Agut at Wimbledon 2019 and poor against Thiem in Paris 2019.

Meddy Bear in 4 sets for me unless the proper Novak Djokovic turns up. If he's trying to slap winners constantly then he'll get beaten easily.
