Sunderland-Leeds rivalry

I read about that penalty incident in another book, I’m not sure if it was the Stokoe one, but it too said that Revie told his players to fall over anywhere near the area. Revie had a history of dodgy dealings and this one was one of his worst tricks.

That was the decade when Leeds used to kick us off the park, breaking Bobby Kerr’s legs twice, and making professionalism a dirty word.

What I'd have done took Revie bribe then beat them

Revie was hardly likely to complain was he 😂

Leeds all time record crowd of over 57000 was for the 67 replay against us.
Thousands were locked out.
Crush barriers gave way. Dozens of fans were hospitalised. The kick off was delayed.
The perimeter advertising was obscured by
fans who had nowhere to go but to sit near the touchline.
Hull was hell. Justice was eventually done. In the semi final . Leeds had a late goal controversially disallowed against Chelsea that denied them a replay.
And May 73 came the biggest disappointment of Don Revie's professional life.
What was the Hull issue?

Everyone Sunderland fan I knew said it from 60s to 90s.
Hate, nah, disliked them
Before your time, gents - talking 60s/70s maybe 80s here...
I probably should have put a time period in the subject line. I forget not everyone on here was around then...
Born in the 70s I remember the 80s quite well lad, just never really remember people saying they hated leeds

"When Leeds United drew Sunderland in the fifth round of the FA Cup in March 1967, it represented just the latest chapter in a rivalry that was intense if not quite amounting to loathing. The relationship had degenerated from the moment the two raced head to head for promotion in 1963/64."

Leeds don't have a rivalry with Sunderland. We aren't in the top 10 clubs on their radar.
Sunderland are a great English historical football club fallen on hard times since 1957 leeds were formed in 1919 who have had one period of sustained success with a crooked manager who cheated his way to success, and that somewhat tarnishes their record.Today i equate them with burnley ..fekking light years ahead of us!

Never hear any of out lot saying they hate leeds, and vice versa.
After the mags and boro they my third hate team .

I know loads of lads in the 80s and early nineties who hated Leeds .

not saying it’s reciprocated . But in those eras it was

Mark Metcalf's bio on Charlie Hurley talks about the second replay at Hull, the players believed it was fixed, Lorimer pretty much confirmed it
Lance Hardy's Stokoe & 73 book, goes into detail on Revie trying to Bribe Stokoe, when he was Bury manager to throw a game, Leeds were almost relegated into. Division 3 and also the replay. That's where the animosity between Revie & Stokoe started
There's also a few articles kicking around of when Revie tried to bribe some Wolves players to throw a game, that would have won Leeds the championship. The Wolves manager Bill McGarry found out and pulled his players in and warned them if he thought any of them went easy on Leeds he'd make sure they'd never play professionally again. It must have worked Leeds lost the game.

Disagree, went to Elland Road a few times 80s n 90s and they really dont like us. Mind you, seemed every time Ive been our lot would wreck the away end , didn’t we turn over a burger van and set fire to it once? Weds night game and we had a big following, think we got beat 2-1.?
Maybe the young uns from Leeds couldn’t give a shit about us but we’d be top ten hated by 40+ yr olds.

Tame now compared to the decades mentioned above....The cup match in 2014 was a quiet affair, they brought a big support, nothing special..and the two matches in the Championship were the same..tho I recall at the away match some Sunderland fans kept decorating that Billy Bremner statue with red n white scarfs..Natives got a bit pissed off with that..
