How many European countries allow smacking of children?

There are some quite surprising attitudes on here around hitting children. I expected better from people conencted to the North East. I'm pretty disappointed.

There is a world of difference between hitting them and tapping their legs to break a cycle of behaviour. It's not done for physical intimidation. There's no "Why I orta..." raised fist etc. That is unnecessary and wrong.
I can totally appreciate how some kids behaviour can make you think "I'll give you a clip", but you don't do it. You're better than that.

It can be done as safety but needs to be done espicailly rarely as it won't have any effect otherwsie..

What constitutes smacking also.. does a tap on the hand that might give a little sting count as smacking. What is the definition.

For instance you have a toddler that keeps reaching up to a bit pan on a hob... You have said no many times.. you have removed them from the environmebt but they return and still want to touch pan.. a sharp tap to the hand next time they reach up can work. Shock tactics on occasion work .

No you should let them tip the pan of boiling water over themselves then while you're sitting patiently with them in A & E explain why they won't get a shag when they're older because they look like Nikki Lauda.

If a child is acting up, you’re well within your rights to give them a smack imho.

I used to get a clip round the lug hole and it’s never done me any harm
Yes you are currently within your rights. I’m sure that will change in the future though and rightly so.

You may not have come to harm from it but several other children do. The law has to protect them too.

There is no reason why children need to be hit. It is weak parenting.

That's your opinion. Which is no more or less valid than mine.

I’ve never smacked my son, not cause I disagree with the principal but in truth he’s such a nice lad and I’ve never ever felt I’ve needed to. My parents smacked me on occasion but they were class parents and not failures at all despite what the OP thinks of them.

What is the justification for hitting children?

Is it for behaviour management? If so, does that mean if a driver makes a mistake on the road that i get to stop them, pull them out of their car and smack them? No

Do you smack because they don't understand reasoning? If they can't understand reasoning, then they equally can't understand why you're snacking them. You're not teaching them anything useful or moral, just that they should fear their parents for inflicting pain on them, which is unacceptable, lazy and immoral.

It might get results, but it would also get results to teach me to put the toilet seat down, if every time I failed a giant came after me and was allowed physically hit me - and I was at least capable of understanding why.

Do you think society is better than it was when schools had corporal punishment?

No it doesn't. In my opinion. I'll give my kids a crack as I see fit. I'm not f***ing volleying their heads off a wall. They're getting a short sharp smack to stop ridiculous behaviour. Or I can try and reason with a 4y old.

You hit a 4 year old!!? FFS - surely this shows why the law needs to be brought in ASAP!

I am astounded you are actually admitting this on a message board. You hit a 4 year old child??

Of course you can reason with a 4 year old. It’s called parenting.

Why are you exaggerating so much ? You’re making out that he’s beating the kid all over the room when in truth it’s prob a gentle tap on the arse or lug. You’re being absolutely ridiculous.

Exactly, a quick tap on the fingers or on the leg as a warning does no harm imo.

I don’t think I am at all implying he is beating the 4 year old up. I used the word “hitting”. He is admitting to hitting a 4 year old child. I’m surprised you or others don’t agree to that being unacceptable, but wow... we’re learning lots this evening.

How young would you go with hitting a child? 3 years old? Does a 2 year old deserve what’s coming to them?

You mean does a 2 year old get a tap on the fingers for touching stuff they shouldn't after being told off? Then yes

So the 4 year old gets a harder slap? I’m glad I’m not a 10 year old!!

I’m asking who the fuck hits a 4 year old? This thread is eye-opening. Eye watering, even.

You know the difference between a tap and a slap - no one has said anything about hitting a kid hard ffs
