Any Other School Staff Going On Strike?

There are no strikes, however individuals can invoke section 44 of the Health and Safety at Work Act and refuse to go into a work environment which is in their opinion unsafe.

Hence unions are advising members to consider their safety at work and to be available for work in a safe space.

My lad is not going

Most of the stuff the poster in question puts on here seem really odd, claims to come from Cuba etc.... It’s like they are an agitator of sorts trying to influence others

look at the language of those posts too, very similar - ‘of course he/she is a union member too’

We've just had the message that the boys school is not opening tomorrow. They've had an emergency meeting today to ascertain what they are doing. They didn't get a unanimous vote on wether to open or close, so are going back to the union tomorrow

Shut for 2 weeks

Government needs to get a grip on this. There’s nothing fundamentally unsafe about teaching in the north east of England this week. Other areas of the country certainly have a case to hear, but there still isn’t much up here and teachers needs to get a grip of themselves too, they aren’t the only profession being asked to work and aren’t the most at risk profession either.

I used to be a teacher and would have had no reservations about going in today and teaching a class. The situation up here is no worse than pre Christmas and they were happy to teach then. Teaching has some of the biggest fannies and whiners in the whole country and it gives the profession such a bad name.

I suppose it's safe for prison officers, nurses, coppers, civil servants etc to go to work. Imagine if all of us keyworkers had the attitude of the teaching unions we would be in even more shit. The average age of a covid death is 83, how many teachers or teaching staff are around the age. Anyone who is vulnerable wouldnt be at work anyway. And kids who go to school are hardly mixing outside of school as everywhere is shut and families shouldn't be mixing with older family members. Once schools closed what do we want shut next hospitals?

Are they mixing inside schools? As i have said previously this isnt just about teachers not being safe, this is about kids mixing in schools, then taking the virus home to family, family that many of which will go out to work and spread it at work.

The teachers are NOT saying shut the schools, schools havent shut since the original lockdown, what there saying is remote learning and schools open for key worker and vunerabale children, as it was last April

Just for a bit of balance, I'm in for a training day today. All staff are in and there hasn't been a single mention of school closures or anything related.

A lot of the civil service are working from home and have been since March. How does a prison officer, nurse or copper do that? You like many are completely missing the point. Nobody is refusing to work. They are offering to teach remotely and continue the provision for key workers children and vulnerable children. Every single worker, regardless of their profession has the right to question their employer if they don't feel safe going to work.

I’m a teacher and I’m going in as my union haven’t advised none attendance. Absolutely respect all sides of the argument here.
.. My nephew left Unison and joined the other Teacher's Union after they wanted to keep kids off the last time. Have heard others have too.. Glad my youngest kid goes to Venerable Bede. I couldn't praise the staff school enough ..

.. Well done btw ⭐ ..

I’ve kept doing my job all of the way through and been happy to do so. I’m also fortunate in that I’ve never been one to be anxious about the risks, just done everything to keep me and so me mam safe.
But I must admit, given the new concerns about transmission among children and given I’m in and out of houses visiting children, and that I’m effectively me mams carer I’m probably more worried than I have been since this whole thing started.
My only bit of comfort is that me Mam has had her first jab.

I'd be questioning home visits if I was you. I could be wrong but I'm sure NHS staff that do home visits had them suspended months ago.
