Didn't he go back to Argentina and get selected for the national team. Also I'm sure he won Argentina player of the season award after going back there after his spell with us I actually got to see him play for us and although brief I do conclude he was maybe a class act as a player in a team of cloggers.

First ever bit of footage I’ve ever seen of him. For some reason his debut was a rare Friday night game at roker v Shrewsbury. All else I can remember of him is a 13 year old me really fancying his Mrs who he was on the front of the programme with..WAD 👍
I remember everyone talking about the the other Argentinean that got away Maradona!! Why today’s Media was so stunned he wanted to come to Sunderland? That was also part of he debut buzz around Roker Park...

He was a good player
he didn’t stay with us long enough to prove his worth

a bit like alli Mcoist

He was light years ahead of his team mates
His debut was on a December afternoon against Cardiff. He found the pace of the game hectic and at one point collided with a team mate and was almost knocked out.
The Shrewsbury game was on a bitter cold Friday night when some teams had switched their games from the Saturday before Christmas.
Our crowd, around 21000 was the highest that night and topped the turn out at Arsenal.
I remember he always seemed to be the one who was substituted but his ability on the ball was undeniable.

He'd play balls his teammates couldn't read so they looked like aimless passes to nothing
One of the best goals scored at Fulham by him and captained Argentina ... He was too good for our players at that time.

A bit like Jim Baxter then

No better than Arnott who did the same job was my opinion then and still is.
Agree. Arnott was excellent.
I was quite underwhelmed with Marangoni to be honest, he never lived up to his "reputation" IMHO.
To me, SAFC were jumping on the bandwagon of signing Argentinian footballers, as was the "thing" to do in England, and it was hoped that they would ALL be superstars.
I am afraid he didn't fit the bill.

aye, weren't the only ones, remember tarantino at birmingham, and ricky villa wasn't exactly a success at spurs, yes I know he scored that goal ( after being subbed 3 days earlier after barely touching ball ) but apart from that.
Still think he was obviously good but perhaps chucking him in the old english second division 6 thousand miles from home must have been a tad alien to him.

Oscar Arce was trying to get half the population of Argentina ower at one point. I assume he wasn’t doing outta the goodness of his heart. iirc he had an Italian restaurant in Sheffield. Knighton was from Barnsley and had played for Wednesday. Sabella to the blades and Maranghoni to us. The stories of Maradona being the one linked to us and the blades may be him trying to pair them up ala Ardilles n Villa. Later Arca and Medina.

As someone else has said, at times he was street ahead of his team-mates, playing balls into areas where they should have been running into but overall he joined at the wrong time for the skills he had. They weren't really suited to our game at the time.
I was at the Cambridge game in the clip but my overbiding memory of him was a 30-yard stunner in a 1-0 win at Fulham, possibly on Boxing Day/New Years Day. Couldn't believe it had gone it, unreal strike.

Didn`t he score on his debut but it was disallowed for offside??

Clearly had great skill on the ball but the pace of the game over here was too quick for him.

Everybody was mate after the 1978 World Cup.

1-0 win at Fulham
Marangoni curled from 25 yards.
I was there, I lived in the north east then and did a day trip on my own.
