As I posted on the original thread he’ll need a lot of time before we see results, especially with the young players coming through. We’ve also sold a lot of the young talent coming through from mumbas age group.

People like Hawkes, Curry, and Neil should be greatly encouraged though. I don't think he'll be averse to bringing in players at U-18 or U-23 level to bring through as well.

So if they were looking for someone to recruit first team players he’d be down the list. Doesn’t inspire confidence in me.

Part of me thinks the things he says are great and exactly what the club have ignored when they've said they try everything to keep academy players here.

Part of me also wonders what the end game of developing young players is. Is it to improve the first team at lesser cost to buying players in, or is it to make sure we have more young players to sell on at the first opportunity.

But I suppose that's me being a cynic, being hypocritical when they've addressed a flaw, and football being football.

Not particularly excited about any of this but that's the past few years as a Sunderland fan talking. It'll be interesting to see how it goes if nowt else.

Yeah definitely but a lot of the real top talent coming through left the club already. I like Hawkes but he’s already 21!

I think he was involved in bringing Che Adams to Blues when Adams was 18. Some of that wouldn't go amiss. And the salary cap wouldn't be an issue.

Yeah think we tried to sign Che Adams but he chose to go to Sheffield over us. He was always held in high regard

That's true, but he did talk about a head of recruitment marra. I may have misheard/misinterpreted it, but if I did not, that is promising. People pulling in the same direction can only be good.

Lot of Prem and Champ clubs tend to release young British talent for the overseas players. Hope he hits ground running and gets the staff in place to take such players on board here before the infamous Brexit kicks in . I feel finances will be there to help this and boost our Academy .

This. I think the plan will be to grow us organically. A bit like Southampton did it. All we need is our very own Gareth Bale now.

Just idle speculation, but can't help thinking Speakman is the sort of sounding board Jack Ross required.

I know he made his mistakes but I still think Ross is a class act who needed the right support to help when things got choppy. Maybe this new guy (who may be just patter but I don't think so) could have offered that. Pure guesswork but Speakman, if given time, might be what we need.

I agree. All the things I was critical of Jack Ross were to all intents and purposes things that should have been the remit of a sporting director.

I’ll ask again - what should he have said?

Could be a late bloomer?
Well, you're not looking at the whole pie, SAFC_Jack. Sunderland is one big pie, and if they've let him in charge of that one big pie, then he’ll be in charge of the pie, and the people are the fruit

Be interesting to see how it pans out between those two tbh.

Speakman known for demanding young players are used. Johnson seems known for ignoring young players.

That's not the impression down here. And he did get people like Tammy Abraham in on loan. Anyway, if he's got the job, he'll have had to accept the way Speakman wants to go, And that means giving the younger players their chance. I think we'll see the likes of Neil, Hawkes, Feeney and others getting bench time at the very least.

I was thinking that as he was speaking. Think what could have been with a progressive structure geared up towards bringing academy lads through to the first team and all that ‘golden generation’ still around.
