Sporting Director.

Mclaren is certainly clued up, knows the game inside out and has contacts all over.

Didn't mclaren help SD buy the club he was certainly at the training ground during the talks there was a picture of him & SD deeing the rounds on here at time

Rumours he was going to become our manager but apparently he was consulting them

I know the appointment is nowt to do with the current board but Dave Jones has been bigging up his Coaches Voice interview with Ralf Rangnick, currently out of work and worked wonders as Sporting Director of the Red Bull teams up until last year. That would be my shout.
I think you’re building yourself up for a massive disappointment if that’s where you’re setting the bar/expectation.

I am a little confused about the role of “Sporting Director” in relation to our current situation.
First point I wonder about, Sporting Director aside just for a moment and for clarity, does the Manager’s salary count against The EFL imposed wages cap? If it does, it follows that getting rid of and replacing Parkinson will cause a real problem for us in complying with the cap.

I read many posts on here over the past couple of days “criticising“ the fact that our proposed young majority shareholder, as a 22 year old would be, due to his “youth” incapable of running our Club and would be in the hands of the failed minority shareholders. The proposed Sporting Director should be an Executive Director sitting on the Board of SAFC as the right hand footballing guide and mentor of our young Mr Dreyfus and as such be his personal and trusted appointee, sitting and working with a further important Board appointment of a CEO with a proven track record in football administration, as Board appointees, surely they would not be restricted by the EFL cap?
This provides the expertise at Board level and enables the subsequent appointment of the important levels of coaching - including Team Manager/Chief Coach - academy, sports science and scouting regimes to be recruited - EFL wages cap permitting if that be so?
In my perfect fantasy world of appointments for Sporting Director - Wenger or Alardyce. For CEO - Marwood.

I think people are probably comparing him with what they were like at 22. It's entirey different, this lad will have received the best education the world has to offer and will be surrounded by sound advisers who he can rely on. Alexander the Great sat on the throne when he was 20. At 23, Mark Zuckerberg was the youngest self-billionaire in the world.

I agree, Marwood would be a great appointment.

Definitely feeling more positive about this than yesterday. The talk of a Sporting Director/DOF is always music to my ears as it suggests we may have someone in charge ready to bring this club out of the dark ages.

Schwarz is a great name to have associated with the club again. I'm not sure why people think he'd be a Sporting Director though when the evidence points towards him being a head coach. I'd be interested to hear people's views on that. His interview with RR a few years ago was canny, he definitely would come back.

"I Love Sunderland" - Roker Report Meets... Stefan Schwarz!

The talk of the consortium buying River Plate Montevideo is interesting too, though I've seen no credible link to that. It wouldn't be a shock though and it would tie up with Sartori's previous interest in tieing the club up with Uruguayan football. They already play in red and white so that's a good start. Also, Matias Arezo could come to Sunderland (if you know, you know).

Rangnick is the gold standard. We can't expect someone like him (or Marwood) realistically. We need to find someone up and coming.

Im loving the fact it sounds like they actually have a plan and are doing jmit in advance. Sounds simple but fuck me we arent used to this

I'm not entirely sure we need a sporting director at this level, we just need competent people in the roles occupied by Rodwell and Parkinson. I'd quite happily see the back of Jones and Sloanes too though, so if a sporting director comes in and does all of that maybe it's not a bad thing.

Eric Roy, past player of both Olympique Marseille and Sunderland is the current Sporting Director at Watford.

He was also a short term SD and Manager at Nice before leaving under a cloud having travelled to South America on a scouting mission without the clubs consent.

He did however win his court case against Nice for wrongful dismissal.

Wouldn’t be a bad shout at our current level. I liked him when Peter Reid signed him and maybe he wants to return.
