New Music Releases Thread

I'm slowly working through things and getting toward the big albums of the week but for me:

Anna von Hausswolff - didn't know she'd released a new album. It's instrumental organ pieces. Quite dramatic, like a garlic and pesto salami.
Will Butler - very good, if a touch Arcade Fire. Very much an Ipswich salami.
A. Swayze & the Ghosts - this came out last week. They're Australian and, more or less, punkish garage rock. It's an excellent album. A pork, venison and port salami, if you will.
Lydia Loveless - well made Americana, liked but not loved. A salami made from the hoof meat of an elderly caribou.
Surfer Blood - it's alright, a bit Weezerish. Supermarket own brand Danish salami!
King of the Slums - the band that were briefly tipped to be the new Smiths are back with their interesting lyrics and electric violin. It's like the last 29 years didn't happen, aside from the brief reformation in 2009 and the two albums they released in 2017 and 2018. Very good! Hardcore Salami Stars!
Thurston Moore - it's very long but doesn't outstay its welcome. Exceptionally good! It's a high quality salami with flecks of goat's cheese and balsamic onions.

And, the other half (minus the salami):

Idles - I have my misgivings about them (mostly about the female support acts thing, not really arsed about Jason WIlliamson) but this is generally a very good album. Dips in a couple of places but generally extremely enjoyable.
Bob Mould - Bob has properly got his rage on here. it's quite ferocious through out!
Sufjan Stevens - beautiful, fragile, very long. I'm always going to prefer his guitar based output to electronic but this spans the gap as well as anything he's done.
Biltzen Trapper - perfectly solid, slightly pyschedelic, slightly Americana, slighlty indie hybrid from a band who know their limits.
Hen Ogledd - long albums seem to be a thing this week. At 79 mins, this is slightly shorter than either Thurston or Sufjans' latest. There's psychedelia, folk, Tom Tom Club style post-disco and more here. A lot more hits and misses and one I think may be a grower.
Diana Jones - beautiful, if very sad. As @buckowski says above, it's a song cycle about refugees in Mexico (and the US). A contender!
Schlammpeitziger - this week's wildcard for me. There are elements of motorik Krautrock, blissed out Balearic and just great pop here. Recommended!
Sylvan Esso - really good. Blissful electo-indie. Very short!
Public Enemy - energetic. They've got a fair few of their old mates guesting. It's enjoyable but nowhere near their past glories. The bloke who did a hatchet job on The Flaming Lips' latest in The Observer did the same with this yesterday.
The War And Treaty - their second proper studio album. It doesn't deviate too much from their debut, duets, kind of country got gospel got soul vibe. Maybe slightly bigger budgeted. Still good.

Album of the week: there are six or seven contenders and more listens may mean it goes to one of the big names but for now I'll say Diana Jones just edges Schlammpeitziger

I honestly think the Bad Boy Chiller Crew album is one of the best of the year. Lyrically it's similar to The Streets and other sort of real life story tellers. But it's musically that sets it apart, it's like some old school house from the early 90's.

I do like looking through the reviews on the rap category on Pitchfork. Run the Jewels got a higher rating than Freddie Gibbs, Westside Gunn, Boldy James and J Hus. Bad Boy Chiller Crew got a higher rating than Mac Miller, Conway, Pop Smoke and Lil Baby. DaBaby got a higher rating than Nas and Royce ffs.

New Drive By Truckers album coming this Friday. Their 2nd of the year!
New Laura Jane Grace surprise album just dropped an hour ago too.

Good news!

Aside from them, it's a busy week, in terms of quantity at least with albums from 21 Savage and Metro Boomin, BlackPink, Bon Jovi, Born Ruffians, Brent Cobb, Corey Taylor, Dawes, Death Valley Girls, Dolly Parton, Elvis Perkins, Gabriel Garcia-Montano, Groove Armada, Hoops, Jonsi, Mariah Carey, Matt Berninger, Melanie C, Roger Waters (think it's a live album), Shamir, Teenanger, William Shatner, YG, Working Men's Club, Roisin Murphy, Hello Forever, Frankie & the Witch Fingers, Joachim Cooder and Pacific Range.

I think Lana del Rey's spoken word album may be out also.

There's a new one from Pet Shimmers as well, two in a year! Their debut has been one of my favourite records this year.

Not great for quality. Berninger and Working Men’s Club stand out.

Will probably give Dawes, Groove Armada, Jonsi, Elvis Perkins and Roisin Murphy a shot too

(actually not that bad now I think of it)

@cluffy must be mega excited about Bon Jovi

As much as I love LDR, I think I’ll give her spoken word album a miss.

DBT, Matt Berninger and (hesitantly) Corey Taylor (he made out he was making an indie-rock record, specifically mentioned being influenced by Radiohead etc, but the first single sounds like Kid Rock circa 1999) for me this ween I think.

Thanks for the heads up on LJG.

For the old folkiies, Swill / Phil Odgers, of The Men They Couldn't Hang, released his first lockdown sessions album yesterday.

There's also what looks to be a potentially excellent compilation out on Friday, "Good Music to Avert the Collapse of American Democracy, Vol 2" - on Bandcamp, one day only, to benefit a voting rights cause. Various luminaries have donated unreleased tracks - some great and varied names involved

Working men’s club has potential to be debut of the year.
really enjoyed what I’ve heard from Roisin Murphy. Her performance at 6 music fest this year was excellent.
will give groove armada a listen for old times sake.

I'm looking forward to the Working Men's Club album. I'm impressed with the tracks been released from it so far
