Sleep Paralysis

I often wonder why my mind ends up where it does when I’m asleep. Often people who I (thought I) have long forgotten make appearances.

Not complaining when my mind has me shagging Jennifer Lawrence in my sleep though.

What dreams are made of.

Nightmares are horrendous mind. Worst one ever was walking through some derelict high rise estate and in the corner of my eye I saw something hanging from a crane from a distance. It was a body and it turned its head and it was leering at me. It stayed with me for weeks and I can still see it. It was so vivid. Still get chills now!

I have been talking about this to my wife today, I had a nap yesterday afternoon before going to get the kids, I was having a dream I was awake and up and about, could not wake myself, it continued to me being back in bed and pissing the bed, I got up and took my top off as it was soaked, I new then I was in a dream and could not wake up as I went for a nap In birthday suit, this went on for another few mins until I eventually woke myself up, I must of had this kind of thing happen maybe 5-8 times in my life, it’s mental like

Oh God, I've had this before too. Didn't realise it was a "thing" until now. It's a few years since I've experienced it thankfully. Not something I'd wish to repeat.

That is grim! I find it amazing that some people rarely dream at all, yet others get vivid and dark ones like the above!

Had it happen a couple of times when I was taking my exams, can only think it was the stress of it all that brought it on. Yeah, for me at least it really is as bad as it is made out. Half real world, and other half dream world. Couldn’t move, couldn’t utter a word. Felt like someone was sitting on my chest and couldn’t breathe and to pile it on I heard voices close to my ears. Never saw figures or shadows, but nonetheless awful stuff.

Hypnogogic sleep state. It's something to do with the dream sleep state which switches of the bodies ability to move so it doesn't act out dreams physically . Summat goes wrong and the consciousness switches back on but the body doesn't.
Had one , put the shits up me , felt like I was suffocating.

I had one a few years back..fell asleep about 6pm on the bed..sort of semi woke up..couldn't move..was lying on my front..i would have swore on my families life that there was something hovering above me in the room behind me..as i turned my head to the side up behind me seemed darker than the rest of the room..i was still sort of in the sleep paralysis state..i lay a while sort of coming round but for a while i was scared to turn my head any further in case something was there..it felt like there was a heavy atmosphere in the room..i slowly came round but it was horrible like.

Get it all the time but luckily I can wake myself up (got to try hard or you just fall back into the nightmare).

Feels like there's something with you closing in but you cant move. Feels like everything is going in slow motion.

Sometimes wake up and the outline is still there for a couple seconds. Mad stuff.

Three or four times a year, usually when particularly depressed, anxious or adjusting from a prolonged period of heavy drinking.

Like a lot of people I didn't realise it was so common or even a thing at all and still think it's really strange the same similar experiences of it. The paralysis, aye, righto, but the sense of an ominous figure you can't see baring down on you as you lie there helpless... feels very real and so profoundly terrifying. Drenched with sweat and afraid to go back to sleep afterwards.

Proper sleep is a godsend and quite rare, I find. You need it. Uninterrupted hour of natural sleep and waking and rising when you no longer feel tired is just one of the best feelings there is.

It's one of my earliest ever memories . Remember the dream proper vividly as well. Part of me want it to happen again, just to see how it feels.

Ive seen forum posts of people taking all sort so of concoctions chasing sleep paralysis

Ketamine should do the trick.

It happened to me a few times but I'd luckily read about it previously so it wasn't really scary, just strange. The most vivid occasion included hallucinating a being (the duvet was over my head so I couldn't see it) opening the door, walking in, standing over the bed and then lying on top of me - I could even feel their face pushing onto mine, over the duvet.

Very disturbing but thankfully not scary, as I was aware of it as a phenomenon already. I'm well trained in acting out dreams as well and seeing things that aren't there in the dead of night, which also helped.

As someone has said earlier, the easiest way to stop it is just to not sleep on your back.

Had it twice. Atrocious. The first time I had to put the lights on as I was terrified and didn't really want to go back to bed the next night. Second time I was stuck in a waking loop where I knew I was dreaming and couldn't properly wake up but dreamed that I was. It wasn't as bad but still disturbing. The human mind is a strange and wonderful thing indeed.

There seems to be a common factor with this 'dark figure' looming over people, never experienced that myself. It's truly amazing what the human brain can do.

My most vivid nightmares occured when I was much younger but I can still recall them in perfect clarity now. Stick with me till my dying day, I reckon.
