Sleep Paralysis

Used to have it a canny bit when I was younger usually after binge drinking for a few days or all weekend. Never found it scary, just weird. Felt like I was possessed by some evil entity sometimes, other times I'd leave my body and see myself sleeping, once there was some hooded figure like a monk standing over me. Haven't had any for years though.

Last time it happened to me was maybes about 2 years ago, thankfully I'd had experience of it so I managed to keep calm and ride it out.

But my first experience of it was pretty vivid it always sticks with me, about 10 years ago me and the lads went to Sunny Beach, Bulgaria. Obviously being a 20 year old at the time we'd been hitting the drink heavy one night, remember the next day it was boiling and I was lying in bed, I couldn't move and everything was black. I could hear the housekeeping knocking on the door but I was utterly helpless to do anything, I just remember this mental struggle I had inside, somehow I managed to wake myself up....was definitely the most scared I've ever been.

f***ing hell

I could be wrong but I think anxiety, stress that kind of thing brings it on.

Also, if you need to be up early, your mind tells you not to fully drift off but your body wants to sleep and causes sleep paralysis to happen.

Some people have visions of things pushing them down and stuff as well. I usually have some shadowy creature around when it happens but I’ve had it enough times to recognise it’s sleep paralysis while it’s happening.

The mind is a wonderful thing.

I get it from time to time, normally wake up just before now. I also get the double whammy of not breathing and wake up gasping for air, that's far worse.

Sleep is mental. The consciousness of sleep is fascinating as so much is unanswered at the moment. Recurring dreams that are really specific but have no relatable context to your normal life is a bizarre one.

They're awful short, sharp episodes of sheer terror with a rising humming soundtrack - just to make the experience even weirder. Thankfully they left me in my30s but not before I attacked a girlfriend, biting her on the shoulder. It's pretty effective torture. If you could reproduce the effects with a drug hardened spies would give over their secrets in hours.

Remove any stimuli from the room like any light. That helped. Try to be relaxed and settled before sleep, nothing on your mind.

That's not the worst of it always. Sonetimes you see things. I've only had it once but i saw a black demon crawl up my bedspread up to my face before I was in control of my body.

Theres a worldwide phenomena of people with it waking up and seeing something sitting on their chest, like a small man or goblin.

Sleeping on your side is meant to make it more or less impossible to experience though, they reckon it's something to do with being on your back f***ing up your REM cycle

I've had it loads of times.
Not sure about anyone else but I always feel like there's a presence, the last time it felt like someone was actually on top of me.
I was hoping it was the Mrs but when things settled no one was there.

I often wonder why my mind ends up where it does when I’m asleep. Often people who I (thought I) have long forgotten make appearances.

Not complaining when my mind has me shagging Jennifer Lawrence in my sleep though.

I think it's pretty interesting that amongst this relatively small sample size there's already quite a few people who have experienced it.

It's probably my greatest fear being a paralysed vegetable unable to speak or move, it must be f***ing horrific to live the rest of your life like that.

Apologies if there's already threads on this, but anyone had it?

Probably occurred to me about 3-4 times in my life and it's been terrifying each time, you sort of go in a mental battle with your body to wake itself up, very weird.
Used to get it all the time when I was a teenager.

Horrendous.
