New Music Releases Thread

Used to listen to his Apple Music radio show when I had Apple music, there is not a genre or sub genre in music that that man does not love.
He is a very avid music fan still. You’re right about his show. He was on 6 Music yesterday talking about it. He gets sent a list from Rough Trade every week with new releases on ticks what he wants and gets it delivered.

In his autobiography, he talks about buying dozens of copies of each album he likes to give away and I’ve seen it mentioned a few times about him being spotted with trolleys full of records in Tower Records etc.

He was talking about Father John Misty too saying he likes him and reminds him of himself.

You might like Colter Wall. He's a Canadian countryish singer-songwriter. Molly Tuttle also, she's more to the folk end of Americana. Tanya Donnelly was in Throwing Muses and is also in Belly. Not sure what the new album is like but she's indiepop-ish with a bit of shoegazey stuff. International Teachers of Pop are vaguely associated with Fat white Family (one of them is in Moonlandingz and some of Moonlandingz are in FWF). They describe themselves as “Northern Rail-baiting nerd disco”. First album was really good!

He's 78. Mostly a songwriter but very occasionally releases albums.
Well done with the Molly Tuttle recommendation, makes very good work time listening. It’s a covers album and I’m particularly enjoying the Americana-tinged acoustic folk-rock version of Rancid’s “Olympia WA”.
I think Colter Wall is too stereotypical old style country for me though.

Just saw there’s a new record out by German synth / art band, Fred und Luna. Not hear it yet but their previous stuff is great. really good electronica.

My usual summary of new stuff I've listened to this week (somewhat shorter than usual):

Colter Wall - quite old school country. I really like this, the lyrics are excellent.
Kelly Lee Owens - this divides between some quite poppy vocal lead stuff and more esoteric electronica. The centre piece, which is beautiful, has vocals from John Cale. Very good!
Jyoti & Georgia Anne Muldrow - spiritual jazz, along the lines of some of Alice Coltrane's stuff. Pretty good.
Tanya Donnelly & the Partington Sisters - a covers album. Some well chosen songs. Some don't quite work (The Pretenders' "Kid" is a bit too like the original) but the versions of both "Different Drum" and, especially, "Ocean Rain" are toptastic!
Tigran Hamasyan - more spiritual jazz, this time piano led. Highly enjoyable, if you like jazz, probably nonsense if you don't.
International Teachers of Pop - proper, proper disco pop magic! Reminds me of Confidence Man's album from a couple of years ago. Jason WIlliamson makes his weekly guest appearance on "I Stole Your Plimsoles". Marvellous!!
Molly Tuttle - more covers. A bit more lo-fi than Tanya Donnelly's album. Again, most work, some don't.
Angel Olsen - as I mentioned, it's songs from All Mirrors done in a more lo-fi manner (recorded in a converted church). Actually, recorded before All Mirrors. This is really good so I'll have to compare the two.

Album of the Week: International Teachers of Pop win the accolade this week.

With the exception of Hurts, Tricky and Throwing Muses I have no idea who any of those are.

I’ve done a bit of googling and it looks like Robb Johnson, Bill Callahan and Emily Barker might all be my kind of thing. They all have fairly decent sized back catalogues as well if I enjoy them.

I'm amazed you haven't heard of Bill Callahan.

Bill Callahan is my number 1 choice for the week. Also, you must have heard of Grant Lee Phillips (former leader of Grant Lee Buffalo)?

Looking at his Wikipedia page I’m amazed too - he’s been on the soundtrack of a few films and TV programmes I’ve seen.

I actually have a couple of Grant Lee Phillips albums in my Apple Music library so I must have forgotten about him in my old age.
