SMB Tennis thread

Benoit Paire arrived in New York last week later than all the other players, retired a set down in his first match last week after losing 6-0 and has now tested positive for Covid so is out of the US Open. Only he could do something like that.

Yep, starts tomorrow at 4. Edmund the only Brit playing tomorrow I think.

Norrie on now, if he counts 😃

This Andy Murray match has been a very Andy Murray match.

Lost the first set, lost the second set looking like he didn't give the slightest of fucks and went down a break early in the third. Got back on serve, saved a few break points which would have meant Nishioka was serving for the match and then won the set on a breaker. Somehow a set of tennis involving Nishioka and Murray then didn't have a single break of serve in the fourth set and Murray closed it out in another breaker. Went down a break of serve early in the fifth but has broke straight back with an incredible lob.

Now currently at 4-4 in the fifth set. I fancy little Nishi to get it done late on but impossible to call really.
Yesssss big man 8-)

Felix has just about struggled past Thiago Monteiro there in nearly four hours so he's Murray's next round opponent.

To put in context just how dreadful that performance was from FAA, Thiago Monteiro's won six hard court matches at tour level in his career and lost twenty five. FAA broke his serve only once in four sets. Monteiro botched an overhead in the tie break there when he had set point to take it to a fifth as well.

Murray will more than fancy his chances.

Carla suarez Navarro has early stages of blood cancer and has to undergo 6 month of Chemotherapy. Good luck to her in the battle.

Best comeback ever:

"Down 6-1, 5-1, and four match points, 20-year-old Varvara Gracheva of Russia rallies to stun French 30th seed Kristina Mladenovic and win 1-6 7-6 (7-2) 6-0"

Got to assume that something went wrong for Mladenovic there? The 6-0 final set suggests an injury.
