Still ordered desserts - they were out quick enough - and tipped as normal. Surely got to let them have a bad day?

You go to a restaurant where you are considered a regular and you ask for a rare steak and it comes out well done. Massively busy night for the place. Took over an hour for the bait to arrive as well but you can tell they are stowed off and all the staff are being champion. Do you send the steak back - cos you go in all the time and it’s not cooked to order - or do you eat it and say it was nice? I took option B cos I was hungry and couldn’t be arsed with the carry on. Or are you an option A? And if so for what reason? One of my mates would 100% be a kernt and demand his 20 bar back or make them re-do it.
Send it back . It's a simple matter to get a steak right.
Or maybe I would have eaten it to prevent delay for my companions but wouldn't expect to pay for it.
I would have done it nicely though .

I’d have eaten it thinking about the poor bugger who ordered a well done steak and got a rare one

I liked then unliked that comment cos anyone who ordered well done and got rare has got a treat the scratter. Nowt worse than that mate who likes it “cooked through”!

Depends. In D’aqua me and the missus sent ours back. It was a good restaurant and had pride in providing high quality food. Serving a well done steak rather than rare is just like serving up a burnt version of other food. There were no complaints from the staff, and we quickly got better prepared new steaks brought out. Not sure why Covid would make a difference.

If it was cheaper pub grub I think I’d just suck it up.

rare to well done - not believable in any sort of decent restauarant
perhaps you got someone else order but any chef knows how to cook a steak.

Probably a genuine mistake but at 50% off why twist on

When they brought it to the table did they describe the steak as rare? Usually they’ll say the cut and the cook level. It’s usually fairly obvious just by looking if it’s at one extreme of cooking or the other. Less so for the in-between levels.

The big question however which hasn’t been asked yet. Which sauce did you order?

How is this even a discussion? If you pay for something to be a certain way and it isn’t, you ask for it to be changed.

Fair enough if it’s an £8 job in Spoons but if you’re paying any sort of reasonable money you expect something decent.

If a regular place, as in being going years and know them well enough, I'd have taken it on the chin, times are tough as it is these days, but on the way out I would have mentioned it in passing to someone on the staff I knew. Just saying it wasn't as ordered, but next time I'll hope it it as ordered sort of thing.

Getting a well done steak instead of rare means the order is wrong, no chef can mess up that badly, send it back or at least tell the staff member when they check back to get it discounted if you don't mind eating it.
If you send a steak back because for example you ordered medium rare and you think it is medium, that will piss off a chef and will get special sauce.
