Second Test - England v West Indies (Old Trafford)

He got 40 and zero and that 40 came from a position of zero pressure

one half century since the start of the Ashes. He isn’t good enough.
Who replaces him though? I'd really hate us to ruin Pope's career by turning him into another Alec Stewart (not saying Stewie was a failure, but had he opened the innings throughout his carer he'd have had a far better record).

I'd have Pope keep wicket for the final test and look to bring Foakes in for the Pakistan series.

Buttler is in the key captaincy group, with root and stokes, then there’s jimmy and broad.

though his form is clearly not the best, that he has not be dropped, shows that he is in that group.

One fifty in 12 tests says otherwise. 5 of which he played as a specialist batsman
There’s more to it than that though, as Carty rightly says he’s a key figure in the leadership group.

You’ve made up your mind on him now, so not a lot of point me trying to argue his case!

For what it’s worth, I’m as happy to see him continue as I would be to see Foakes get a chance, but in most cases I firmly believe you don’t change a winning side, albeit with our available bowling options it will be hard not to.

I probably wouldn’t change for Friday either. But I’d change for Pakistan

the leadership group I don’t buy, it’s performances that count. And he hasn’t delivered. I’m not a Bairstow fan but I’d select him ahead of Buttler

All to be seen. Bairstow has a long wait to return imo. Possibly won’t see him at all this season. Anyway, bring on Friday and fingers crossed we don’t get rain delays

I was with you right up until that point.....

no way does Bairstow deserve a recall. He's done nothing on note to earn it

The right ‘leadership group’ is key to getting the right performance I’d say - also wouldn’t say he hasn’t delivered tbf, he certainly hasn’t been awful.

Got runs at Southampton and first innings here. Was asked to go in and smack it on Sunday and couldn’t quite manage it. Not gonna hold that against him. Aside from dropping Blackwood he’s not done much wrong with the gloves and took a good catch yesterday to get us a big wicket at a key stage.

Without wanting to sound too much like your mate (where is he by the way? banned I presume) how much more do you expect from your keeper-batsman.

It’s a fair challenge. And he hasn’t kept badly.

43 tests in now. Averaging just over 31. Is it dreadful? No. But we have options. And I’m afraid he doesn’t look like influencing many tests.

Tim Paine is widely assumed to be a dreadful option, he averages more than Jos now

Does Jos have a brother at all?
