New manager

Based on what like? Allardyce is a survival specialist. He had a very good squad in the Championship with West Ham and loads of money, and didn't get them up automatically.

Also, it doesn't matter that they're well paid - the squad is still woeful. Will Grigg might be the most expensive player in the league, but he's evidently not what we need. Even the magnificent Allardyce wouldn't be able to get a tune out of him.
Will Grigg has scored 20 goals + a season at this level consistently before he came here - proof that probably poorer manager's than Allardyce HAVE got a tune out of Grigg. There are plenty of managers who would have got us up, in my view. Parkinson has made a woeful attempt.

I wouldn't be massively disappointed if Parkinson stayed. If he left for any reason however, then I'd go for Ian Evatt. Wouldn't cost too much to get out of Barrow. Listening to the Tifo podcast his methodology and mentality sounds like he could be every bit the next Chris Wilder. Also he sounds like he if old fashioned in the fact that he is heavily involved in recruitment as well, which would suit the clubs current setup.

I'm massively impressed with him actually. Obviously a very small sample size but as an out of the box appointment I'd be very happy with him.

I can see the threads now - non-league owner appointing non-league manager, totally tinpot, etc. Not disagreeing with your analysis by the way, but for too many it would be like a leaf balloon.

Irrespective of how our season ends, or if Parkinson gets shunted, what makes the OP believe that Kevin Phillips should be employed as our next manager, he has zero managerial experience.
Genuine question by the way.

Think that illustrates the underlying issue though - in that a manager heavily involved in recruitment is the exact opposite of what we should be aiming at. Trying to catch lightning in a bottle like Sheff Utd did with Wilder is highly unlikely to happen again. More likely is that we sack him within 18 months. It's way past time for us to put a proper structure in at the club and start doing things for the long term. Parkinson isn't the right manager for us - but that doesn't mean that we should keep rolling the dice till we get lucky with a manager and a group of players for a season. That sort of thing simply doesn't last

I’d come around to the idea that Ross was struggling by the time he was sacked but appointing Parkinson was so uninspiring that unless he got off to an absolute flier, was always destined to disappoint.

You could just about see a rationale in the appointment as he possessed something that appeared to be a major stumbling block for Ross - experience in managing in this division- but incredibly he took a side just outside the playoff places to 15th place in just over his first two months in the job.

Nobody can say with absolute certainty how the season would have panned out but for me it looked like a long shot that we’d even make the playoffs let alone win them with the form we were showing.

Our last three games highlighted a lack of ideas, creativity and cutting edge. Injury had deprived us of our best defender and we looked fragile without him.

Unless we can work miracles in whatever there is of a transfer window I can’t see what’s left at Sunderland mounting a promotion challenge anytime soon.

Agreed. Think the truth of the situation is that the only way we mount a challenge next season is if everyone around us moves backwards. We aren't capable of moving forward.

I agree totally that getting a play off place was not a given which is bad enough but I had an eye on the relegation places when we managed to slump down the table to 15th... To be only 3 points behind an automatic spot at this stage with the crap season we've had only highlights the fact that this division is poor and a Club the stature of Safc shouldn't have to be going practically cap in hand begging to be given a place in any possible play offs..

If Donald is still the owner, then PP will be here. As bad as that may be, theres still bigger things to worry about, main one being only having half a squad next season.

I agree McGeady seems like hardwork but he’s a talented player and the amount of games he has won or significantly contributed to us winning is worth persevering with and getting the best out of him.

Re: defence, we still look all over the shop. And when you consider we struggle to score goals even conceding 1 is too many.

I don’t have an issue with 3-4-3 but if you play the same 11 players game after game and don’t regularly make substitutions you’re going to have fatigued and injured players.

I just feel he is yesterdays man.

We need a coach with new ideas who is willing to play football a certain way. When you’re battling relegation from the Premier League it’s fine grinding out results but we’re in the third division. We should be using this opportunity to forge an identity and a way of getting us back to where we want to be.

Look at Bournemouth, Southampton and Sheffield United of sticking with a plan.

I agree with some of your points and see where you are coming from......I just feel Parkinson can get this team playing (not necessarily good football but effective football) to get us out of L1
we're below where he took over Ross

been a total f***ing disaster
We were 6th when Ross was sacked so 1 place worse off....although 4 points off automatic currently 3 points off

Fair enough marra.

Regardless of gaffer I’ll always give them my full support.
