New Music Releases Thread

Looking forward to a few drinks and a good Spotify session tonight after Mrs Skillmeister has left the room.

Can anyone give me your top 5 essential new songs so I can whack them on a playlist today ready for tonight.

Looking forward to tapping into the current smb vibe.

April playlist is sorted. 4hrs and 40 mins of good, bad, shit and very good songs. They're all tracks from albums so if you enjoy what you hear, get the album on.

I'll do May later in the month - this April one got too big!
@skullmeister here is the SMB April playlist

Some good, some er....shit

Some different types of electronic stuff I’ve been listening to recently.

Sei Still - Sei Still mentioned these last night but it’s even better after today’s 2nd listen. Really good motorik stuff.

Rheinzand - Rheinzand. excellent record. Female vocals, bit house, downbeat, electronica.

booka Shade - Dear Future self. More house / techno dance floor stuff. Good if you really want to think you’re not stuck in on lockdown.

inner square - rubicon. Excellent album. very laid back slow house stuff. Superb.

peaking lights - ESCAPE. Usual dub / electronica / disco from US duo. Not their best work but still good.

Listened to a few of these recently...

Rose city band, bit different from their debut, sounds a lot more like a moon duo album. No bad thing, it’s fantastic.

Public practice, tremendous, full of great tunes and lovely bass, thanks for the pointer @ chunkylover.

Moby, been getting shit reviews, means nowt of course, I think it’s great. It’s a long one mind, over an hour!

Been playing the first 2 Happyness albums after enjoying their recent new release. cracking band.

Misses this week, Moses sumney and perfume genius both done nowt for me.

Yeah I really like the Moby album. I’m not a fan of the single from it, Power is Taken, but other than that it’s great. His melancholic piano and more ambient house stuff is superb.

My weekly digest of new and newish stuff I've listened to over the last 4 days:

The Dears
- solid, reliable, dependable, pretty good. Not exactly doing anything new.
Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith - ambient goodness. Vocal samples at times, interesting.
Moses Sumney - half of this was out already and was excellent. The second half is up to the standard.
Jason Isbell - mentioned on another thread. Very good, well written country rock.
Sparks - enjoyable and witty, some cracking tunes.
The Magnetic Fields - lots of short songs. Probably the closest thing in spirit they've done to 69 Love Songs in the 20 years or so since that came out.
Jess Williamson - spacey, shoegazey Americana. Good.
Perfume Genius - a lot more muscular than the early albums and clearly aimed at the broadsheet market. In saying that, I think it's extremely good.
Sleaford Mods - a compilation of rarities, remixes etc. As such a bit of a grab bag with something for everyone, except maybe your dad.
Willie Nile - veteran singer-songwriter. This is a hybrid of Americana and antifolk. It's really good indeed.
Cavern of Anti-Matter - electronica, a soundtrack, good but probably not as good as the proper albums.
Sei Still - excellent motorik debut from Mexico.
Maita - enjoyable female singer-songwriter album. Won't change your world but a pleasant listen.
Rose City Band - the modern masters of the smooth choogle return. Maybe a little more country than their debut. Great!

Album of the week: a toss up between The Magnetic Fields and Rose City Band.

Never heard of either Rose City Band or Willie Nile but both sound like my kind of thing.

The midweek album chart looks interesting - Sleaford Mods at Number 1 and Jason Isbell at number 4. I assume this is a bizarre benefit of COVID?

If you’re familiar with San Fran pysch band Wooden Shjips, Rose City band is the latest project of their bandleader Ripley Johnson. like Arkle says this is more country leaning.

Some of those Magnetic Fields songs sound like Blanche (Little Amber Bottles). Love Gone Wrong especially.
