That was lazy jouranlism - it's simply the net asset value from the last accounts of the companies he owns. It ignores the fact that valuations normally exceed net assets (particularly in businesses like insurance broking and leasing), property, and any cash from profits of the sale of former businesses. The latter alone will be the main source, as the family made a substantial amount selling what became Hastings Direct.
