Well documented in N40
Had a close relation from Stoke involved
You lot were run ragged
Your take on it doesn’t really stack up

OK Mate. I will ignore my memories, from actually being there, in favour of the account in a hooligan novel!!

Hello folks – Stoke fan here in peace.

I work on the ‘Duck’ fanzine and I’m planning a different type of article for our next issue – out whenever something approaching normal matchdays return to our lives once more.

I aim to ask supporters of several clubs 5 questions about their perceptions of Stoke City in order a to create a big feature article“Us and Them.” For the following questions, feel free to answer in varied depth/ brevity but a couple of sentences at least for each is ideal:
  1. Generally how do you see Stoke City the club – a rival? Non-entity? Certain type of club? Disdain? Admiration? Pity?! As a fixture – is it of general appeal?
  2. Are there any Stoke players/ teams that have made an impression on you over the years?
  3. Are there matches between your team and Stoke you recall hating/ loving?
  4. In home / away matches, what have you made of the Stoke support? Any particular memories?
  5. The Victoria Ground/ The New One – what did/ do you make our of our home ground(s)’ the grounds? Any particular experiences or impressions?

Given our reputation over the years, this could be a risk but then again, it would be great if I could glean a diverse range of honest/diverse/ cutting/ funny/ serious or even complimentary views.

If you can be arsed, thanks for your time.

Take care of yourselves,
Lee Hawthorne @ORFYDUCKMAG

1. The SMB vs Oatcake rivalry is as good as it gets for messageboard wars.

2. Always gets me that we didn’t use Delap and his long throw but then it was so effective for Stoke. Dave Kitson was absolutely rotten but scored against us one year.

3. The 2-0 loss to Stoke where Wes Brown got sent off really pissed me off. Was there that day and it was a ridiculous red card. Also remember beating Stoke in the snow at the Brit. I think Huth might been sent off. McClean scored one of the goals for us.

4. No memories of the away support. Remembers it being loud when Arnautovic scored against us in a 1-1 draw.

5. Been to the Brit a few times, decent ground. Wasn’t a lot around it though, think we went into a harvester pre match.

Never saw Stoke as a rival. Always felt they saw us a rival after a modicum of success playing shite effective football under Pulis. Maybe it was something to do with being the best team in red n white , I dunno ? Fans could be rough, but away turn outs always very poor. Admired how they made the new stadium a tough place to go. The first two visits I made there were 1-0 defeats based around set pieces and long throws. Utterly tedious and anti footbal entertainment wise. Went again when Defoe equalised from the spot in injury time. Another shite match.

Adam always did well against us, but as a person appears to be a bit of a tosser. Huth/Shawcross partnership was tough if not basically illegal at times. Huth should have been banned from football at one point.

  1. Are there matches between your team and Stoke you recall hating/ loving?
Already mentioned some above. Hated 3-2 defeat from 2-1 up. Just felt like the ref bottled giving fouls and offsides. The 1-0 win when Mclean scored in the snow was a good memory and nice surprise. I went to a 2-0 win at the Victoria Ground circa 89/90 Another struggle when Stoke were poor.

  1. In home / away matches, what have you made of the Stoke support? Any particular memories?
Got a noisy rep when first back in the prem as did we. Soon went downhill once settled in. Poor away support and always over rated themselves in terms of numbers as a crowd in general.

  1. The Victoria Ground/ The New One – what did/ do you make our of our home ground(s)’ the grounds? Any particular experiences or impressions?
Victoria was ok . As above went not lomg after Hillsboro and there was a bit fo a crush in our end afte rthe match one the way out. Stoke were obviously proud of their new stadium , as you would be. In reality it appears half arsed and half finished.

Although only a small boy, I remember Stoke coming very close to winning the First Division in 1974-75. Hideous injuries finally took their toll at the very end when I think you lost the last 3 games. Great team then: Shilton, Pejic, Hudson, Greenhoff.
Like most non-big city clubs, Stoke haven't been at the races subsequently - apart from a few years recently of non-football.

Always have seen Stoke as a top flight team. The first 10 seasons I watched us Stoke were comfortably mid table and were one of half a dozen clubs who could have won the title in 1975. On their day with Hudson Banks Salmons Conroy and Greenhoff they could take anyone apart. In Tony Waddington they had a genius of a manager who signed players past their best and give them a new lease of life. Look up the FA cup semi finals of 71 and 72. In that era Stoke were probably the unluckiest and most talented team not to reach the final. Arsenal beat them twice.

Aye Stoke were a cracking team to watch when Waddington was there,I liked John Ritchie

Leicester too under Matt Gillies. Two entertaining teams.
I didn't realise how many people from the North East had moved there. Talked to some Stoke fans in the Harbour one season and 2 of them were Sunderland fans who had grown up there.

Another of those places that seems to be a shithole that has very nice surroundings.

The 5 towns thing in 1 city is weird too ... they fight each other in the absence of anyone from elsewhere:)

Coal mines closing late 50s early 1960s.NCB were offering jobs down there in the pits, Stoke,Wolverhampton,Coventry.

Quite a lot of people moved,I had a few uncles ( long dead) went.

If you can be arsed? It is unwise to ask if anyone can be arsed on the SMB. The COVID-19 virus is going to pass before anyone can be arsed on here.

1. I see STFC as a very big club I envy and I would love us to become you and do the things you have done in your recent history.

2. Ricardo Fuller. Peter Crouch is also a player I have always wanted us to sign.

3. Not really. Nothing sticks out in my mind. Though I bet I have been to a fair few home games where we have been playing you.

4. Very good.

5. Never been to either.

Played in the late 70s, a cup game and a league game, Was it first game of the season, we had a huge turn out. I think it was the cup game, on the train, waving farewell to your lot, a rock hit the window next to my face, I think it probably would have killed me.

We won the replay in the cup match, I think we scored 2, a cracker from Pop Robson is all I can remember

Stoke City - a "proper" football club yet unglamorous. Seems to be well run (currently). / Watched SAFC since mid-Sixties. Sadly most encounters with Stoke have been drab and unappealing. / In that time few Stoke players have left an impression. I admired Jimmy Greenhoff and Alan Hudson had flair. SAFC fans always left Peter Shilton with an impression. Even now if he turned up at the SoL they would relentlessly chant "Tina" at him. / Stoke have always had a decent fan base but nothing stand-out at Roker Park or SoL. At home they seem to have a fervent, intimidating atmosphere, though I've never been to current ground. Went to Victoria ground a few times mid-Seventies. We always took good numbers. I was always wary of trouble and I was in the thick of the hostility once.

1. When you had 4 or 5 of our ex players it ramped up our rivalry for a little while but other than that not a club i really think about. Definitely not a fixture of appeal though! There's nowhere decent to go for a drink beforehand then we generally get beat.
2. That Pulis team with so many of our ex players were horrible to watch but very effective and we'd blitz lge 1 with a team like that. Delap was no great shakes for us (we didn't even know he had a long throw🤦‍♂️) but Lawrence, Whitehead and Collins were good solid pro's for us and i think Keane/Bruce got rid of them too soon.
3. The snow game, great win for us and fantastic atmosphere in our end but the most treacherous journey home I've ever had, couldn't see shit on the m6 and the car was sliding about all over the place, literally feared for my life.
4. When things are going well for you the atmosphere is bouncing, one of the better sets of fans in terms of noise but not the most welcoming set of fans.
5. Only went to the Victoria once around 1996, you beat us 1-0 with a Simon Sturridge goal iirc. Don't remember much about the ground other than it being a similarly aging stadium as Roker Park, we were in an upper tier i think and it was seated with wooden benches but i could be confusing with somewhere else? It's been a long time tbf.
Not a fan of the Britannia as an away fan, we generally get beat and the concourse is tiny with not enough toilets meaning it's absolute bottle knecks when you're down there. Seems badly designed from that point of view, maybe it was a disregard for away fans and it's better in the home ends?

To summarise Stoke is not a place i particularly enjoy going to but i have no real 'beef' with your support. There are some sets of fans i find to be absolute scum and others that have been really sound over the years and always want to engage you but you don't really come into either category for me but you're loud and passionate and it's never like visiting a library like some grounds so you're alright by me.
All the best, i think we need to get our act together and get promoted if we're going to meet anytime soon.

1...Absolutely Irrelevant (no offence - I would expect the same answer about us from any other non Mag club)
2... Denis Smith, Rory Delap and Peter Shilton.
3... 4.... 5.... are basically void because of the answer to 1.
Not sure what the reputation you refer to is, you really are a non entity of a club.

When you had a certain manager, it was a few years ago, we were both in the Premier League...I think at the SoL I was witness to the most awful boring game of football ever...I cannot even remember the score. I guess it was all about not losing and staying up...but I doubt even you true fans thought much of the non- entertaining fare served up.

Quite like Stoke as a place, been to ground a couple of times, you have had a couple of decent worth watching players now and again.

Good luck with your research
