Sunderland would be irrelevant in football if it wasn’t for Netflix

Always found the mentality that we must be objectively significant, important or a big club to be really weird.

Sunderland AFC are important to me. Why would I give a shit what it means to others. That's got nothing to do with why they matter to me.

It's like arguing that you have the best family or something

Around the world? No one knows anything about Sunderland. They confuse it with Southampton. Only clubs who played in European competitions are known and relevant. It's frustrating as hell. Like it or not, this documentary made us relevant, people around the world found out about the atmosphere and history. We might even find interested buyers wanting to be in the spotlight. STID on Netflix is the best thing happening in recent years.

Everyone knows about Swindon from the office to this Country :)

I think playing Fifa on the playstation/Xbox Sunderland are a popular choice as the SOL is a licensed ground on it and people like that challenge of getting us back up in manager career mode.

It’s fair to say our media profile is far greater than our footballing one at the moment.

Unfortunately both sides are viewed as absolutely clusterfucks.

The Club is dead, long live the Club.

these people don't really have a clue about football then. club's who compete in one of the top leagues in the world for 10 consecutive seasons will be known to football fans. spoke to a few colombian's in croatia 2 years ago and they knew all about us

He's constantly gone on saying how much he has resonated with the area. The documentary shows he couldn't be further from the truth. My Dad always says up here you have your dinner at 12 and your tea at 5. People are very set in their ways, but he tried to walk in like Billy Big Bollocks calling the shots and shouting the odds. That approach was never going to work.

Totally agree.
Some of my best days drinking in the NE. From South Shields, Whitley Bay and Newcastle. Some nights I have nearly been sick from the laughter with the locals.
If you want a laugh with them and don’t act the Billy Big Bollocks they warm to you.
Remember being in Newcastle on a Friday night when Newcastle were playing Chelsea. A couple of us were out having a laugh and you felt we were being “clocked” in one of the pubs. One local couldn’t help it and asked, “Are you Chelsea?”
As quick as I could reply, with a little twang in my accent, I said, “No Mate with an accent like mine, we are Swindon fans and off to Hartlepool.”
Wanting to chat then and asking us if we wanted a beer.

Always enjoyed a few Friday nights in South Shields and once met a cracking blond lass who was a Sunderland season ticket holder. All my Mates agree that their favourite place in the Country is the NE without doubt. The night life was so unreal. Sadly those days are behind me now.
Whitley Bay was magical :)

When you live away from the north east for a while, you realise that all the local clubs are the same - nobody other than you cares about them.

There's a few exceptions of course, but in the main part.
True. And don’t think the Mags are any different. No one outside the NE really gives a toss about them either, other than probably to laugh at them from time to time

Everything is irrelevant to those with no interest, obviously. Whatever somebody is into is only of interest to those into the same shit. Runners run, those who don’t run don’t give a shit about it. Bikers ride bikes but most couldn’t give a fuck. Same for everything. Whatever somebody thinks is the shit is only the shit to others with the same interest.

I think thats a f***ing stupid thing to say to be honest

and also the series was absolutely shite

In what way?

Not having a pop at all, haven't seen the new one yet but I thought the first series was pretty poor which is probably why I've had no real inclination to watch Series 2 so far.

Just no insight really, its just the Charlie M show

I didn't see the point of it honestly

Thought these were massive lads fans

Who gives a flying fuck what anyone else thinks? Its our tribe, joining is up to you, but once you are in, there is only one way out, feet first. Sunderland till we die.

Would much rather be irrelevant than have a load of sycophants who only care about trophies and star players support us.

Be nice to not be shit like but most elite clubs fanbases are largely horrendously childish.

He is spot on . Sunderland as a football club are only important to our own fans. When you explain who you support to a foreigner they tend to look at you with a blank expression . At least after Netflix people will actually know who we are.
Spot on. Outside of the north east, Sunderland have zero relevance or importance, anyway you want to describe it. We live in a rose tinted bubble of self importance that just isn't real.
The netflix doco is gaining us a wider acknowledgement at the very least. I have friends who aren't football fans at all, she's a schoolteacher and he's an IT nerd. They loved the1st series, "car crash tv" was how he described it. "They just stumble from one disaster to the next". They're loving series 2 now. They brought it up in wider conversation, initially, without even knowing I was a Sunderland fan.
Whether this wider audience benefits us moving forward in anyway who knows ?

Another benefactor gets an inside look perhaps and thinks I'll have a crack at that ?

The painful exchange when you tell them you’re from Sunderland and they say where’s that and you say it’s near Newcastle

Every time
