2 new signings for Durham

Durham new signing. Saffer, currently with Cape Cobras.

Farhaan Behardien too.

Behardien has to be one of the most average players I've seen playing international cricket.

Like not shit but just not good

Aye, nowt flash, clearly a decision for him to maximise his earnings before age gets the better of him.

Both players first class records are very good in fairness, but the old CLS Factor of taking atleast ten runs off a batsman’s average will remain to be seen

On the face if it, two Saffers isn’t ideal - especially considering my long-held opinion in the main of Kolpak players. It doesn’t sit particularly well with me, but the mention of Benkenstein and Di Venuto in the Echo article is certainly something which piqued my interest - we can all be hopeful that these two lads buy into Durham CCC in a similar way to those two Club legends and if they have even half the impact it should go a long way to inspire the younger lads a la Stoneman and Borthwick - again, as the article mentioned.

It’ll remain to be seen of course, but this certainly appears a statement of some intent from the club going into 2020. I’m being as bold as to suggest that Beefy, North and Franklin are targeting promotion as a minimum this season and that atleast is something we can all be excited about.

Behardien record is actually good across all formats. But I was just always baffled by him.

He batted at like 6 or 7 as the all rounder coming in after the likes of de Villiers/amla and would just plod along a like 5/6 an over when they needed that extra boost. Almost like he should have batted 3 instead to anchor the innings.

End of the day durham need to get back to division one. We've brought through our fair share whereas other counties haven't. Our batting isn't producing anyone that has any chance of playing for England so may as well join the rest in picking kolpaks.

Marcus North on Durham's website selling it like we have signed Benks and Diva with the impact they could make. They feel like two cheap fillers to me.

Behardien is an excellent all formats player. Don't know much about the other one but his first class record looks superb.

Aye fair point

Are these both Kolpaks? Hows that work with Kolpaks supposed to be ending this season

Bedingham has an "ancestral visa", whatever that is.

Interesting article quoting Ashwell Prince, Bedingham's coach in SA. Not a happy bunny, there has to come a point when they do away with the quota system and treat everyone the same. I get the reasons why it was introduced but the players don't seem to happy with it any more. Caught an interview with Ntini during the SA series where he said he was bored of 'player of colour' playing a part in his selection as it immediately made you feel inferior, like you were there as a fraud and not because of your ability.

Would rather Durham played a couple of young local lads. Too many nonentity Saffas clogging up the system.
Sadly there is not enough quality to service 18 counties. Very sad to see how many players Durham have who did not play their schools/development cricket in this country and then how many of the pucker Englishmen are not from our region.

No better than Hampshire now really. Having said that we will be much stronger now
Balls to all that logic. ECB screwed us over, about time Durham started to put Durham first.

We tried that.... We got fucked over. Balls to "the system". That said we still have Burnham, Potts, Trevaskis, Carse who will be knocking on the door along with others.

Never a truer word spoken marra, which is what tempers my opinion of this somewhat. Whilst I’d rather NE lads were getting the chance and doing the biz, we’ve got more than enough credit in the bank in terms of bringing homegrowns through to allow us a couple of outsiders.

I agree, I think the system SA aware persisting with has served its purpose.

Obviously theres a massive caveat to that - the fact I’m not South African, nor have I ever been to South Africa, nor do I understand whatsoever what it’s like to be white or black in South Africa - however, it seems the case that it’s counter-productive and possibly even discriminatory in its own way.

Mods, can you merge the two threads on this? Didn’t see the other one earlier

More than fine. Happy to back the lads, happy to back the club and coaching staff. Durham need to look after Durham. We owe nothing to anyone outside of the county
