North east gig turnouts

The cost of gigs is more expensive now due to the breakdown in physical sales.

Must have an effect.

Also the lack of publicity. Unless you follow specific bands you will never know.
Doesn’t affect the rest of the country which is what the threads about
Interesting that the Peacock has started putting on gigs and from what I can see are selling very well. Previously they had people like Hugh Cornwell on and cancelled due to poor sales. Must be how they are marketed.
i wouldn’t imagine the marketing’s any different to the rest of the UK where he does well. Saw him a few weeks back at a 95% sold out show.

I think, as I’ve mentioned nostalgia and safety plays a huge part.
where I live, a covers band will get a packed crowd but 4 young kids playing their own stuff will get a few of their mates and that’s it.
I get people want to reminisce and get pissed to songs of their youth, but the appetite for most people discovering something new isn’t quite there anymore unfortunately
Hasn't it always been be case. Macca has said the Beatles only started writing their own songs as everyone else was performing the very same covers...... luckily.

A lot of people totally missing the point of this thread which is why are NE gigs poorly attended in comparison with the rest of UK?

All the rest of the country? Doubt it.

Dunno what you do for a living but there’s a smbrs involved in it and they seem to be agreeing.
My local has young touring bands on who sell out the cool centralish London venues. I’ve talked to their “people” at the bar and they’ve mentioned it to me when I’ve asked em if they’re playing the NE.
It’s a thing.

I went to see a local cover band at the pub last Friday for free, the sound was excellent and I and everyone else had a brilliant night, unforgettable. I certainly prefer going to watch a local band than farting on in the big venues.
That's not for me at all. I don't go to the pub to listen to some never has beens thrashing around pretending to be Status Quo, Bon Jovi etc.

would agree with this. Stumbled on a listing for a Nathaniel Rateliff solo gig at the bath forum (1700ish auditorium), £33 a ticket, f***ing shocking.

It's been shite for years. I don't think there's much enthusiasm for live music in the North East unless it's nostalgia acts. It's why every little festival has gone to the wall, and good things have stopped.

The Cluny isn't a nightmare to get to either man. It's a 15 minute walk from the centre of town. I used to do it probably once a week on average and still catch the last bus home to Washington no problem. That's fairly irrelevant anyway as its not really the Cluny that struggles with attendances. Places like Think Tank, a minutes walk from central station, I've been to gigs there with a handful of people when the rest of the tour has been very well attended.

Gigs in town at Pop Recs were also poorly attended despite having relatively big names on playing for nowt.

Good post.

Regarding Cluny, it depends where u coming from. 1sr time missed the connections back, 40 quid home.
Last 2 visits the band's were still playing while we left for connections home. Not seeing the full gig isn't good, hence we'll not be back. All other venues in Newcastle it's no bother at all.
Shame as I personally love it in there.

Last metro is about 11.40pm. There’s a metro stop at Manors like 5 minutes walk from the cluny

It’s the same up here. I manage to drag a mate along when a band I like plays Dundee but they end up with tiny crowds compared to Edinburgh and Glasgow. I saw the Real McKenzies in Dundee 2 and a half years ago - their Edinburgh and Glasgow gigs were both completely sold out but we would be lucky if the venue was even half full. A lot of that will have been because Dundee was the Thursday whereas Edinburgh/Glasgow were Friday/Saturday so people from Perth/Fife were prepared to travel an extra 20-30mins to a weekend gig rather than having to take a morning off work or stick to Cokes.

Having said that AJJ are coming to Dundee in July and it sold out in 2 and a bit days whereas there are still plenty of tickets for Glasgow. It’s currently the only date of the UK tour that’s sold out. It’s the smallest venue in the tour though which might have something to do with it.

Think it's been about 50/50 for gigs that have been chocka and those that haven't at places like Independent, Riverside and Think Tank over the last few year.

Saw Slow Readers Club and The Pale White in that time, I thought were both a bit generic indie, but both sold out. Saw WH Lung and Pale Seas, thought they were both class, yet they played to venues not even a quarter full.

Pale White have just sold out Independent for this Saturday as well actually.

Manors is pointless if you need a connection at Monument.

I get why people would be anxious about leaving it late. Luckily I can walk home from the Cluny.

Cluny is less important than it was. Riverside, Think Tank and Sage 2 are all getting bands that Cluny once would have got. Even Jumping Hot Club have loads less gigs there.

The lad lives in Sunderland. Manors to central then on the south hylton train. Gigs aren’t finishing that late. You can get a metro after 11.30pm
