Classic albums you just don't "get"

Rush 2112.
People raved about it when it first came out but to my ears it was absolute crap. It gets worse with age anarl!

Which song shall I start with to hook me in?
I always find that a difficult question to answer  My personal favourite is ‘Nude’. But anyone who only likes The Bends and OK Computer Radiohead will probably have that one down as boring and dull. I would just recommend giving the whole album a few spins to be honest. In my opinion it’s pretty much a perfect album.

Of the post-OK Computer albums I always recommend this one; firstly because I genuinely think it’s their best and secondly I think it’s probably the most accessible. Someone will be along in a minute to say ‘Kid A’ is the best which is perfectly reasonable to suggest but I think ‘In Rainbows’ just edges it.

I used to be of the opinion that everything post-OK Computer was nonsense but one day ‘In Rainbows’ finally clicked. I love ‘The Bends’ and ‘OK Computer’ but they became a different band after and they became even better.

I love the feeling of suddenly falling in love with an album that you previously struggled with. That moment it clicks and things just fall into place. It's like learning a language that one week is just noises to you, but the next it falls into place and suddenly means something. You get an urgent feeling to hear it again and again. I shall give it a try today and maybe later this week too.

Aye, Id say of all the songs that'd be the one that works fine as a stand alone. I'd have to listen to others on their own more I guess but the odd time I have I feel they lose something when not as part of the whole record.

That doesn't really work when you're not quoting marra.
It does, I was laughing at the whole thread.

I blame the internet. At one time you had to walk into a shop with real people in there. More often than not there’d engage you in conversation. You only knew about music if you, or your mates had ’the album’.

Also do people listen to albums just because other people claim it’s good?

That squeaky media woman, whose da worked with asbestos, and who lived with the other media wanker and became an ‘author’ once said in a record review column she had “get thee to the reggae shop and get influenced”. I’m paraphrasing, mebees. Do some people actually do this kind of shit? Do they try to get ‘influenced’ by shit?
If I think it’s good I’ll have a listen - if I don’t, I won’t. Regardless of what someone else says. Classic or not.
A lot of albums also contain a lot of shit along with mebees two or three good tunes. can’t think of an album where every tune is good.
otherwise the ’now that’s what I call mass produced autotune bullshit’ would all be classic albums. IMHO.

some people just dont thrive in that environment. Nowadays you have the music apps themselves recommending stuff but also websites and forums where people chat about stuff and offer up suggestions. It's great!

But now they miss the pleasure of fingering through album after album looking at sometimes good, sometimes amazing, sometimes shit, artwork. The feeling of finding an album or single you’ve been looking for for ages. They miss the thrill of ordering eg a banshees single from Germany cos it wasn’t released here, then having to wait weeks for the fucker to arrive. They miss the ball ache of having seven different versions of the same track on different albums by the band/solo artist.

Things move on. The experience you describe above is a cherished memory you have from your younger days. The generation before you would tell you it was shit though and complain you didn't get the pleasure of only hearing music socially in a diner or somewhere (I need to stop using Happy Days as my analogies)

Youngsters these days are more than happy with how they consume music. In fact all the downloading has lead to more of a focus on live music. People are hearing bands play live now much than they have for years.

Thanks for your insight. Yes I know this, apart from the previous generation stuff, many of whom presume (I don’t know) would’ve been agog at the new Elvis, for example to extend the analogy, single. That’s why I said “they miss”, so often.

Tidied. But good points. Downside is the price of a tkt fleeing up.
