TL;DR

Atmosphere have dropped a “surprise” album today. Hardly any publicity or anything and apparently Slug answered an interview with “I don’t know what you’re talking about” when questioned on it.

If you can’t beat @Arkle , join him…I think this list is symptomatic of how I listen to music now – there’s too much to listen to and it’s all too easy to access, so I think I don’t stick to any one album for weeks on end like I used to back in the day. I think that’s why very few albums stick out as total favorites like they might have done in the past. That means I find it almost impossible to come up with a list of 5 or 10. Now I measure it on if I went back to an album and played it more than 3 or 4 times or I bought it (even then I don’t play them much at home because time is limited). I guess the good and reassuring thing about the list is that music is alive and well and there’s still loads of stuff that I like out there, if you're willing to investigate, and much of it is due to this thread!

Jaz Coleman & The St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra – Magna Invocatio: A Gnostic Mass for Choir and Orchestra Inspired by the Sublime Music of Killing Joke

Stuff that probably doesn’t qualify (compilations, covers, re-recordings, etc):

Screaming Females – Singles Too

Industrial Accident – The Story of WaxTrax Records

Echo & The Bunnymen – Peel Sessions

We Were Promised Jetpacks – These Four Walls (10th)

At 7 tracks and 16 minutes or so, I'd say it's an EP as well. Very good though!!
Yeah, it's certainly a stretch - Rough Trade were selling the vinyl at pretty much full price as well, which I thought was a bit of a pisstake.

Listened to the Chromatics album for the first time yesterday - I liked it and it might make it on the list in time but too early to qualify!

For being top secret until the day it dropped, this is actually very good. Atmosphere are always great lyrics-wise, very witty even when they are being a bit silly and this one is no different. Slowly becoming one of my all time favourite hip-hop acts I think (they have a long way to go to overtake Run DMC, The Roots and The Beastie Boys though).

I know all of those man!

Currently giving the following new ones a go:

Veltiver
Rosie Tucker
Michael Cormier
Hovvdy
Friendship
Garden Centre

My top ten(ish) of the year probably:

Fat White Family
(Sandy) Alex G
Purple Mountains
Matt Maltese
Hot Chip
Nilufa Yanya
Frog
Martha
WH Lung
Devendra Banhart
Gong Gong Gong
Kiwanuka

Biggest disappointments: Sharon Van Etten, Angel Olsen and Alex Cameron.

Lucky Daye - Painted
Rapsody - Eve
Freddie Gibbs & Madlib - Bandana
Ari Lennox - Shea Butter Baby
Little Brother - May the Lord Watch
---
The Twilight Sad - It Wont Be Like This All The Time
Hot Chip - A Bath Full of Ecstasy
WH Lung - Incidental Music
Blanck Mass - Animated Violence Mild
Fontaines DC - Dogrel

Five hip hop/R&B record and five others. Hard to do a list this year outside of the first two genres, hasn't been the best year I don't think. Chemical Brothers, Black Midi and Purple Mountains could be on that list I guess.
