I see the council lovers have appeared, just like Vaux when it was never the councils fault that they didn't buy the site as the council can't do that type of thing, until they did exactly that year's later.

It would appear the majority of money is coming from central government transforming cities funding. There is some match funding but it doesn’t break down who is contributing the £4.7m.
Other are correct in saying that the buildings and track are owned by network rail but is managed by Northern Rail. Nexus are obviously a key stakeholder as they operate their trains from the station.

There is a railway station over the water that could be used as the main gateway to the town. All the land is currently available on the sheepfolds side to create a main entrance. With bus and taxi drop offs, the lifts are already in place for disabled access at St Peters.
It would be a whole lot cheaper than pouring more money into the hole in the ground that is the current railway station.
I am not one who sticks up for the council. But at the time Swallow closed Vaux no one wanted the council to buy the site as they didnt want any more money going into Swallow.
That attitude changed when Tesco bought the site.

You can see from the image in that following link the amount of area there is available. Guess the only question is whether there is sufficient space to come off the track and then back on again.
