New Music Releases Thread

Not heard of her, will check her out. Thanks!
I’m assuming she must have been with a label that don’t appear on streaming services because there’s an album from 2013 and an EP from last year and nothing in between.
Listened to both of those today - the album is very folk/acoustic and the EP has more electric guitar and full band in it. I liked them both. I'd say the show she played was about 50:50 electric/acoustic (no band) plus a couple of covers - Teenage Fanclub's The Concept, which was marvelous, and a Concrete Blonde cover, which I wouldn't have known but the missus did.

I thought the long gap looked odd, too, when you pointed it out, but when I read a little it sounds like she's been in a bunch of bands in between - a bit of a gun for hire. This year she's been in Frank Iero's band, The Future Violents, and she's also been in bands with Dave Hause and Kevin Devine. She tours a lot as well (Turner, Against Me, Menzingers) so it sounds like she's only dabbling in recorsding solo stuff. Seeing her again tonight - be interesting to see how it carries in a bigger venue.

Good to see Biffy hiding tickets around Dundee yesterday - nice idea.

There are a lot of new releases this week. Not sure how interesting all are. Albums from Alter Bridge, Battles, Caroline Polachek, Clipping, Dave Monks, Floating Points, Foals, Gucci Mane, Jacques Greene, Jim James, Jimmy Eat World, Mark Lanegan Band, Matana Roberts, Pick A Piper, Refused, Rob Halford, Third Eye Blind, Tourist, Vagabon (much delayed), White Reaper, Patrick Watson, Walrus, Beabadoobee (an EP out earlier in the week), Steve Gunn (acoustic versions of songs from his last album), Wet Tuna, The Magpie Salute and Like A Villain.

I know they were brought up on here a few weeks or months back, but I finally listened to Bodega for the first time a couple of days ago - really like them! Whoever said they were good - thanks! Another example of why this is the best thread on the board!

Going on holiday in just over a week and need some albums to download - what are your top 5 of the year. I know a big question but any suggestions - any genre - Americana, Hip Hop, Rock etc.

NIck Cave & the Bad Seeds - Ghosteen
Richard Dawson - 2020 (only just out but excellent)
Aldous Harding - Designer
Brittany Howard - Jaime
Bill Callahan - Shepherd in a Sheepskin Vest

That's very much off the top of my head...

The thing is, I could easily replace all my lot except Nick Cave with near enough any four of yours (prefer the first Big Thief album of the year though). Then there's debuts by The Murder Capital, Fontaines DC and Ohtis (as well as WH Lung).

Thanks - got Bill Callahan but will check out others.

Will check out Big Thief. Got Murder Capital/Fontaines (I was probably the only person disappointed seeing them live at the Brudnell - found it all a bit forced and an act).

Yeah, I see there is an older album, which I listened to, but I was talking about the new-ish mini-album which would have been mentioned recently - like the past week or so

Incidentally, going to a "show" at the weekend that would have probably been right up your alley if you were local - I say "show" loosely as it's actually billed primarily as a beer festival  but Mogwai and Parquet Courts are playing. I like PC but I'm very excited to see Mogwai as I've never seen them and keep missing them for one reason or another. Screaming Females are also playing - like them too. There's a bunch of bands playing earlier in teh day who I'd like to see - Priests, Control Top, Lower Dens, Empath - but sadly there's no way we can get there in time to see anyone outside of the main 3.

Link?
I like beer festivals

You’re right

that’s me all over

any recommendations for Boston?
Venue looks extremely cool

When are you going? I was up there in May for the Frank Turner festival but that was first trip up there in few years. Plenty of bars...
More Than a Feeling?
That's too good

Nowt like leaving me plenty of time for suggestions!

Well, baseball is over up there and I know the Pats are away this weekend, they play down here Monday night, so there's no sport for you (unless hockey is on - not sure). We stayed in Brookline and walked in, but that was because the venue was at the right end of town for us, right opposite Fenway Park. Brookline was a decent little neighborhood with a few bars and restaurants, a cracking little record shop (where I bought a Manchester Orchestra and a Fugazi single....and...ahem...a Tygers of Pan Tang album:lol:).To be honest we didn't do much else but drink and go to the shows each day! Went to McGreevy's which is the Dropkicks' bar - it's a pretty generic sports/Irish bar that claims to be the first ever "sports bar" (not really sure how they can make that claim) but the music was decent. That area looked ok too. Sam Adams and Harpoon are the main breweries up there but there's a lot of craft places now - we tried a few local brews - would imagine you can do tours and tastings.

Have you been before? Previous trips I've done the Freedom Trail - it's red brick line in the sidewalk that takes you around the key historical sites and that was really good (there are guidebooks that you can use that follow the same route and tell you about each stop - various burial grounds, Bunker Hill, where Paul Revere started his ride, Samuel Adams' house, old Ironsides (battleship), Faneuil Hall, etc. Trip up to Cambridge to stroll around Harvard - back in the 90s that was certainly a typical studenty area with bars, restaurants, record shops (Fort Apache studio is up there somewhere, but I was up there before smartphones and online maps so I couldn't find it, sadly - bloke I asked at a Cambridge record store was no help!).

I think they still do whale watching (and white sharks these days) out in the bay, but you'll be toward the tail end of the season for that, I imagine - I think I've done it early October before, but summer is best. There's a high speed ferry to Cape Cod (Provincetown) too.

How long are you there? I'm sure you saw The National are playing Thursday. For my tastes there's SLF, DIIV, Vivian Girls, and Against Me! in the next few days.

That's all I've got - not a lot to go on. Enjoy your trip.
