This is Reiver's final contribution to this, and possibly any other, thread.

Reiver has asked me to thank all the decent people who appreciate the information and post this message.

"Now that there's a 'conclusion' it's a good time to stop posting. The other information about the 'kick in the teeth', new owners' plans, the future of Ross and the replacements being considered will come out in time without my contribution. It's a shame that some posters can be vindictive and bitter without any good reason. The only common denominator seems to be a less than enthusiastic outlook on Sunderland. We have a bright future to look forward to and it's time for everyone to draw a line on the past. Haway the lads!"

For what it's worth, I can't disagree with a word of that. In the course of this and other threads, I've had my honesty, integrity and professional competence questioned. Like Reiver, I'm questioning the point of sharing anything at all because of the grief that comes with it.

Wots the "kick in the teeth"?

FWIW I'd trust a good scout over a bunch of stats at this point. The eye test is more important and useful than stats. I agree though that we're making life hard for ourselves if we disregard the numbers completely.
Disagree. The stats tell you stuff that an eye test doesn’t. And the true level of quality of scouts is pretty poor. Generally local club pros and owld geezers who wander about in club shop tat talking about what football used to be like. You can’t get everything out of stats. There’s still personality stuff and the like. But I would never trust the word of some old **** called Clive over a dispassionate record of what a player has actually done.

Think Reiver already basically confirmed that they were looking to buy NUFC (not the time reported in the press years ago but much more recently) and apparently Ashley did something that put them off and they've ended up buying us instead. Not certain but I think that's it

I stopped getting involved with the thread when the drivel started. I appreciate all the input from both of you!

Ignore the shite hawks.

Pretty much agree on that one. I think the stats give a very good starting point rather than relying on the opinion of one or two scouts. Use the stats to see which players are likely to offer what we need and then, when you've whittled it down, go and speak to people about character and things that the stats don't show before bidding. It doesn't have to all be stat based but should be a consideration

There’s 4 people at the club who might not be there this time next year. I’ll let people have a guess who.

I do hope it isn’t the new owners, they haven’t bought out Donald & Co officially yet, nor spent a penny on the Monorail or its more technological High Speed DellHover Pod system alternative!

Yep. Like the two idiots on Sunderland Till I Die discounting a player just because he was wearing gloves!

Thanks Grumpy, can't blame either you or Reiver for feeling the way you do. I really hope the both of you don't let the idiots drag you down as I'm sure the vast majority do appreciate your insights but wouldn't blame you for going the opposite way now with your valuable info. Thanks for keeping us posted and a huge thanks to Reiver for continually sticking his head above the parapet despite the crap he took.

It should be the primary consideration for me, marra. As the sophistication of these stats increase it simply outstrips what someone can spot with the naked eye - particularly some local jobber. Then you have the ability to compare analytics between the players you’re looking at and the ones already on your books (or indeed other players worldwide with similar characteristics) to infer how someone might do. Honestly, I’d be taking a leaf out of Liverpool and City’s books and putting analytics at the heart of a recruitment committee. I don’t want any player to come to the club purely on the basis of anyone’s contacts.
