Ashes 5 test - The Oval

Sibley
Burns
Denly
Root
Stokes
Pope
Foakes
Curran
Leach
Archer
Broad

But they won't be anywhere near that team

Still a series to level and England will surely change the batting for this game?

Pope and Foakes in??
Burns has done enough to keep his place
Denly has shown character the last 2 tests
Root is not a no.3
Roy. What to do with Roy. To bin him off after 1 test in his natural position would be very harsh. Give him a game on his home ground and see
Stokes - legend
Bairstow - looks shot
Buttler - shown some promise, probably keeps his place for The Oval
Overton - looks a better batsman than a bowler
Archer - if we can have the Day 4 one rather than the day 1 one then he stays
Broad - best bowler in the side
Leach - top lad, great bat, very average bowler

FWIW
Burns, Denly, Stokes, Root, Roy, Buttler, Foakes (w), Ali, Woakes, Archer, Broad

Sibley
Burns
Denly
Root
Stokes
Pope
Foakes
Curran
Leach
Archer
Broad

I’d love an approach something like this. Rip it up and start again basically. Much like the Germans did in 2012 in football, think that’s what we need. Think some are too mentally scarred to really play a significant role going forward and would rather watch us build something and give some younger ones a try. I don’t know if the exact line up is what I’d go with, but I agree on the principle off it all.

Same team I suspect with maybe Woakes replacing Overton.

This. Not a chance they’ll make 3 or 4 changes when there’s a chance if levelling the series. They’ll spout a load of bollocks about sticking with the players we’ve had so far because they’re hungry to level it etc

Perhaps for the best they don’t and we get a pasting by 400 runs again. Might send a few shockwaves through the camp to shake things up - it’s in desperate need of a shake up tbh

Not a chance they'll drop Bairstow. He's the untouchable golden boy
he's a good wk in fairness but hes picked primarily for his batting and his batting has been sub standard during this series. Hes not alone on that but it hasnt been good enough.

Often enough good keepers have been left at home to acomodate sub standard wicket keepers who can bat enough though so he'll keep his place because he can do that and bat to a decent level

Shake things up how? Are there 3 or 4 excellent batsmen who are being kept out? Roy has to go and pope or balance can come back in in rhe middle order. I keep hearing that Sibley is a great opening batsman whk likes to bat slowly and it would solve more than one problem if he came in and lived up to the hype. But there arent 5 or 6 worls class cricketers who could come in and shake things up. That doesnt change if we narrowly win the next match to tie the series, draw it or lose by a massive margin.
Of course we could change the selectors and if root can be persuaded to give up the captajncy without retiring from international cricket then that may be for the best.

Sibley has turned into Bradman this summer like, personally I think Hain looks a far better prospect than him. I’d rather stick with Denly and Burns for now at least.

Anyway, I don’t think we will see too many changes, maybe Curran or Pope but I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s the same squad, as @hudson88 said.

Same squad for me, Woakes or Curran in for Overton. No need. Bowling let us down this game.

Buttler up to 6 though.

Looking ahead to long term, a new opener will be tried, Root has to move back to 4, crazy he was pushed up and its back fired badly.

I'd be looking to bring Pope in for Buttler long term too.

I guarantee 99% of posters pushing for him have never seen him play live. Can't just lack at the averages and say he has to play like.

with his amount of runs Sibley ought to be given a chance. No guarantee that he can go to the next level but being prolific opening in CC 1st division is the best indicator available. Otherwise you're relying on hunches.

Yeah I honestnly have no opinion on Sibley at all, just saying its not just as simple as that

Jennings is a very similar case, scored a ridiculous amount of runs in the same amount of time, but you could see straight away would never score runs in England consistently.

Its an easy stick to beat the selectors with.

Sure he will get picked at some stage and good luck to him, just mean nobody can say either way if he will do well or not based on just looking at an average list. Its about how, when and where you get your runs, as well as how many

I noticed everyone slated the Denly selection, Sky had stat and was like over 18 months or so only like 5 or 6 players scored more in county cricket than him, and he was averaging 55 in div 1 this year, with 2 big 100s, he was a fair enough pick.
