4th Ashes Test - Old Trafford

Yes, considering the performances Roy has turned in, picking Sibley or any other first class opener was a 'no brainer'. In fact if Jack Leach had opened the batting, I'd have fancied him to score more runs than Roy has, as he knows how to defend and not throw his bat at everything.

Curran averages 30 in test cricket, with the ball, 20 in England...how is that not 'good enough'....? Overton has been bang average when picked, albeit handy with the bat.

Woakes is knackered by all accounts and was dropped for this rather than his third test performance.

Not sure what value there is in his 'extra bounce' when we've already got three seamers over six foot, he struggles to hit 85mph and we are playing a team that are comfortable on bouncing wickets.

Curran is a horses for courses type selection when conditions are massively in his favour. His average reflects him doing well on green seaming typically English pitches. If he had played more in less favourable conditions his average would reflect that. Unlike Stokes, Woakes and others he doesnt play test in, test out in a multitude of conditions because he doesnt have the pace and bounce to get good players out on flat pitches. I'm not necessarily in favour of Overton either, like Curran he isnt quick enough but I completely understand why a 5ft 7 inch, 80mph pitch it up seamer hasnt been selected on what is likely to be a flat OT pitch with a bit of bounce. However I expect if Overton doesnt perform that will automatically mean that Curran would have been successful!

I can't understand the change mind. Overton is neither here nor there. If any change was to be made, it was Pope or Curran coming in. Where has Overton come from?

With a few clouds early and showers in the afternoon reckon the whoever wins the toss will bowl.
Best weather could be last two days too.

I'll go for a delayed start, two hours cricket then that'll be it for the day.

Looks to fair up in the next hour or so, so depends how quickly they can get it cleared up. Will probably be decent weather at the forecast start time. Slight chance of more rain around 2pm through till 7pm. No rain forecast for tomorrow, Friday looks a stinker.

Few dilemmas with the toss

Australia's first innings scores so far are 284, 250, 179. Really poor, and to think they were only a wicket away from going 2-0 up in the series with those scores.

If the weather is changeable at the toss and forecast to stay the same throughout the match, we've got to put them in if we win the toss. We need to give ourselves the best possible chance of winning the game.
