4th Ashes Test - Old Trafford

Curran in to do the control pace bowler role which Woakes hasn't been able, meh.

The problem is not the bowling.
Another one in the Toby Roland Jones mold. Great on a green top when it's cloudy, but offers little else on a flat deck.
Curran would be just as dangerous as this lad and offers far more with the bat

OT has been nibbly all year and there's been rain the last few days and probably for the next two or three. It'll be green and it'll be cloudy.

We need a mid 80s swinger for variation. It's a meh selection.

They've brought in Overton for extra bounce.

Jimmy would have played had he been fit. So basically were making up some plan that wasn't the plan a week ago.

I think the selectors were completely unprepared for Jimmy not being fit.
I'm not against dropping Woakes, but surely Curran is a better option than Overton

Overton was poor in Australia and NZ. Roland Jones would have been a better selection, never mind Curran.

Selectors on glue.

Another 'no brainer' after the Sibley 'no brainer' ;)

I feel sorry for Curran only in so much that he has been picked in the squads which suggest they think hes good enough yet when the chance has arisen he has been ignored. Personally in most conditions, most of the time, as a bowler he just isn't good enough. He would have bowled well at Headingley first up but Woakes deserved selection before him and I can only assume they are expecting the OT wicket to have a bit of bounce which would suit Overton before Curran - he has been in very good form also.

I would have stuck with Woakes - a really good bowler who had a poor match.

Looks like it, but Overton isn't the worst horses for courses selection in the world. I'm not that bothered by it TBH.

The tests will be won or lost by the top 4. It’s so important Denly and Burns bat time and we get to 70/80 for nothing. Then when they inevitably get a wicket, Root comes in against the 3rd and 4th choice bowlers and an older ball.

Then when Roy comes in at 4 with an awful lot less movement in the pitch, he has a chance to prove everyone wrong.

I would have selected Woakes because I think he is easily the best bowler of the 3. While i don't think Overton or Curran are really good enough I would probably have chosen Overton between the two on the one test match pitch we have where bounce is sometimes a factor.

Agree. If the top 4 can put us in a strong position (200-4 for example) then the next 3 could take us out of sight

I often feel like they need reminding every shot “don’t get yourself out”.

No one complain if you’re done by a brilliant bit of fielding (Root second innings headingley against a decent ball) or a bowler bowls a Jaffa.

I THINK the penny may have dropped in the 2nd innings at Headingley. They left the ball so much better and if they continue that at OT then we have a chance. Yes you do need to look to score, but you need to pick your time to do it. I have no issue with us being 50-0 at lunch then 220-3 at the close

I get the impression something is up with Woakes, whether he's struggling with an injury or something's happening away from the pitch, I don't know. He just doesn't seem right at the moment and I think the selectors/captain/coach like him enough that they wouldn't drop him just because of a couple of average games.

Won’t even get to 30/0 man

Yeah that makes sense to me, can’t see them dropping him, they maybe something we don’t know.

Got a bad knee, and he's played a lot this summer. Figures.

Yes, considering the performances Roy has turned in, picking Sibley or any other first class opener was a 'no brainer'. In fact if Jack Leach had opened the batting, I'd have fancied him to score more runs than Roy has, as he knows how to defend and not throw his bat at everything.

Curran averages 30 in test cricket, with the ball, 20 in England...how is that not 'good enough'....? Overton has been bang average when picked, albeit handy with the bat.

Woakes is knackered by all accounts and was dropped for this rather than his third test performance.
They've brought in Overton for extra bounce.

Not sure what value there is in his 'extra bounce' when we've already got three seamers over six foot, he struggles to hit 85mph and we are playing a team that are comfortable on bouncing wickets.
