SMB Tennis thread

Would love to see Konta get another win to make a first quarter final here, but will be tough. I think she has a poor H2H with Pliskova.
 

He's not hanging around is he? I thought I had it all planned - Rog finishes around 7.30/8pm so that Serena will start once this Konta match has finished, but he's fair whizzing through his matches these past couple of rounds.

Side note - can't believe Konta lost that first set. She was in front pretty much all set, early break, multiple chances for a second, ends up losing it on a tie break. She has recovered from an early break in the 2nd set, so hopefully she can take it into a deciding set.
 
Good win in the end for Konta but she should have taken that first set.

The fact that she did come back to win against a player who is no mug shows she has got it in her to do this. It's just that sometimes her mental strength lets her down in important games.

It would be great if she can go all the way now.
 
Tremendous stuff from Konta. She has gone from nowhere to reaching the quarters or better in all 4 slams this year. Its an amazing achievement but you just know the second she gets beat she will be accused of 'bottling it' rather than praised for yet another excellent performance in a slam.

It was a great win full stop - players cant expect to have it all their own way against players of her ability. She deserves much more praise than she gets IMO.

Great win for Konta - plays the winner of Key-Svitolina (12am match) - would be great if she could make the SF in every slam.

Barty out, and Serena has just rolled her ankle here - still carrying on for now, but her chance of a long run here must be diminishing, so that bottom half is opening up a bit. Could see Serena winning here and then giving Wang a walkover to the semi's.

Stanimal does have some sort of hoodoo over Djokovic, has done him a few times in slams now, he never seems to be able to beat Federer though.

Cillic on his day is more than capable of beating Nadal, he has been so poor for so long now though, but I do think it will be far from easy for Nadal.

Federer hasnt lost to Nadal for so long now either away from clay, I think it's his to lose now.
 
I know why Nadal is favourite with the bookies but I think if Fed can get through the next two matches avoid being on court too long, he'll be favourite in the final in my opinion.

Couldn't have said it better myself. She's now 17-3 this year when the match has gone to a final set, quite impressive for a bottler.

Surprised to see Nadal favourite to be fair, Federer already in quarters and he should beat Dimitrov easily who probably cant believe he has made it this far, fully expect Cillic to be a harder match for Nadal.

Your general point still stands, but she actually lost in R2 in Australia, losing to Muguruza in that epic match that didn't finish until well after 3am. The significance of this win was that she has now made the QF in all 4 slams in her career, as her best prior result here was a couple of 4th round exits. But still superb to be 9th in the live rankings and very much in contention for the WTA Finals which is the biggest prize fund in tennis history, men or women. Winner could potentially make just shy of $5m if they win all their matches. She started the year around #40, and had to qualify for some WTA events for the first time in ages.

Happy with Vekic vs Bencic in the first section quarter final. Either of those vs Andreescu would be a very nice potential semi final, especially Bencic.

Not much, a couple of RG quarter finals, and a decent chance of anther here, but if unless you're a 30 odd year old Big 3 where slam records and enhancing your legacy are pretty much the be all and end all, the rest of the tour is still pretty important for the rest of the field, and for tennis in general. He's had a rough 2019, but still has managed to win multiple big titles in the 2 prior years, but his lack of slam success has obviously been well documented on this thread and in general - would be pretty ironic if he finally had a big breakthrough here after doing little all year.

It's testament to how good Zverev genuinely is I suppose that he's ranked where he is and has won the tournaments he has despite at times having a really poor forehand, can't volley to save his life, hits six hundred double faults a match and finds it impossible to win a Grand Slam match in straight sets.

If he gets his head sorted out then I'd probably still back him to be the next first time Slam winner. Needs to stop trying to play like Andy Murray does. Move inside the baseline and use your weapons.

Slams are all that matter really though, that is what you get judged on, dosnt really matter what you win outside of a slam, Zverev has done nothing slam wise to backup the reputation he seems to have.

I respect your opinion, and a fair few will share it, but I personally disagree. Players may as well get second jobs from the end of January to the start of June, and from now until January if that was the case. Indian Wells aren't going to put up $9m each for both men and women's tournaments every year, and almost $1.5m for the respective winners if it's effectively a nothing event. Shenzhen have put up the biggest purse in tennis history to secure the WTA finals, the winner will get more for winning that than any slam - these events do matter.

A Canadian winning the Rogers Cup will be (and is) massive in that country, and I'm sure Andreescu will have inspired many a Canadian with her recent success, likewise I'm sure kids in Germany will have watched Zverev's O2 success last year and the fact that he became the 3rd best player in the world at one time and would think, hey, he's pretty good at what he does.

Obviously slams are the focal point of the season and where the vast majority of interest and spotlight lie, but IMO there's plenty of tennis outside of them to be able to build reputations.
