4th Ashes Test - Old Trafford

How do you solve a problem like Jason Roy?

Drop him for Ben Foakes, Bairstow to open for the rest of the series and relinquish the gloves to Foakes to concentrate on batting. Swap Root and Denly and if fit bring in Anderson for Woakes. Mainly for the reason we cant have Stokes, Foakes and Woakes in the same team :)

Burns
Bairstow
Denly
Root
Stokes
Foakes (wk)
Buttler
Archer
Broad
Anderson/Leach
Leach/Anderson

Then after the ashes make wholesale changes and stick to them and let the young players grow such as Pope, Sibley, Crawley, Stone etc.
3 wicketkeepers in the team is just nuts. If Bairstow isn't good enough to keep then he needs to bat in a proper position and score runs. Then give gloves to Buttler OR Foakes

Burns
Sibley/Denly
Bairstow
Root
Stokes
Roy
Foakes (w)
Archer
Leach
Anderson
Broad

tbh 6 is a proper position.

I wouldn't have Roy though.

It isn't nuts if they're 3 of the best 7 batting options...…… They aren't in this case, but I'm just saying ;)

Don't think Bairstow is the answer at three either, he's done nothing of note in the series batting down the order so I'm surprised anyone would promote him on that basis.

Did ok at 3 in Sri Lanka

But you're probably right. 4 & 5 have to be Root and Stokes, The rest of the batting line up can fit around them

I just don't think Buttler and possibly Bairstow are good enough

Different proposition facing Sri Lankan bowlers in their home conditions to facing Australians in England.

For me:

Burns
Sibley
Denly
Root
Stokes
Bairstow
Buttler
Archer
Leach
Broad
Anderson

Not going to happen though

Buttler is in last chance saloon for me. He desperately needs a score

Got to bring Pope in soon but I wouldn't bring anyone new in to a Test on which the fate of the Ashes rides.

Leach
Anderson (if fit)

Bit of a worry, Archer coming in at 6 down mind but Anderson for Woakes is no-brainer if he is fit.

Ironically Woakes (and probably Moeen) are probably the best bowler/batsmen we've got to come in at 6 down. But neither firing on all cylinders.

Worth noting that Jimmy bowled 29 overs in the 1st innings of the seconds game, but hasn't come out to bowl today.

Don't know why.
As suspected when he didn't come out this morning, Anderson ruled out of the series.

England squad for fourth Ashes Test against Australia: Joe Root (capt), Jofra Archer, Jonny Bairstow (wk), Stuart Broad, Rory Burns, Jos Buttler (wk), Sam Curran, Joe Denly, Jack Leach, Craig Overton, Jason Roy, Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes.

I find it absolutely staggering that two players are averaging less the 10 in their six innings so far and are not being looked at.

Amazing.

Denly is going to open apparently with the rest moving up l
i.e.
Burns
Denly
Root
Stokes
Roy
Bairstow
etc
You only make change when there's a strong case that the alternate will improve things. Not so sure there is given that the current occupants at least have experience against the top class opposition.

Buttler has 55 runs in 6 innings, Roy has 57.

It's not like they're only struggling, it's pretty much like playing with 9 men.

Ridiculous test squad given Roy and buttler are struggling badly
also moving root to 3 after his stellar knock in the last innings is stupid
