England v Ireland, One Off Test

Finn, Woakes, Onions or whoever else was in better form would have taken the wickets if he hadn't played.

For example, 11 wickets in the last Ashes, at an average of 48, 9 wickets in the preceding home series Vs WI at 37. How many times, prior to getting dropped in SL, did he take a place from a spinner, on subcontinent trips?

That said he has been a great bowler for England in the main.
Perhaps.

Of course Finn and Woakes have taken epic roasting from people on this forum over the years. As far as Onions is concerned he was really unlucky with that bad, nearly career ending injury he had, but I think everyone thinks he could and should have played more despite that, very unlucky.

Just lifted this off TMS web-site

Joe Root in 11 innings as an opener averaged 41.7. The next nearest to that is Haseeb Hameed, who averaged 32 from five innings.

Is that it for Burns? 7 matches, 14 innings, 312 runs @ 22.28

Back to the perennial roundabout though. We can’t find anyone to open with Burns never mind another to replace him. All of our options for 1-3 are shit, so what can you really do about it? Guess you just have to stick with two and hope they sort themselves out

Jack Leach looks a better opener than Burns

Crawley or Sibley? Personally I'd be begging Alistair Cook for one more series

Not sure the ashes against their attack is a good time to break in some new batsmen. Could just end up ruining them like the others we’ve tried

I agree wholeheartedly. It may be a genuine option to open with a night watchman. At least that way we have the additional bowling option. Even if they just come out with a night watchman mentality of blocking and see if we can do root et al a favour of coming in after the first change

Burns, outstanding county player a d rightfully deserved his chance.
Does seem he is not suited to test cricket though, might be the least runs by anyone we have tried so far

Funny how none of our top county players look test quality. It's a bit like that time none of our List A players Looked world cup quality. Maybe the problem is the coaching? These lads have been contending with Ramprakash and Trevor Bayliss's 'fearless cricket' stroke playing mantra.
