Durham Big Meeting

The Council provide a full range of services. The funding from central government has been slashed so services are rightly under review. That doesn't mean that the history of the County should be neglected. Sufficient funding should be provided.
Fully aware they offer a range of services. Funding the miners shouldn't be one of them

Funding history.
They should pay for it themselves. The council weren't interested in funding history for war heroes.

So you keep saying, jesus, how bitter and twisted are you?
Bitter and twisted for wanting 1.1 million quid of tax payers money to be spent on public services such as special needs education which is undergoing a spending review? If that makes me bitter and twisted then I'm delighted to branded that. Cheers

Yes they were. They were just more interested in getting a good price for the land. Maybe part of the Redhills refurb could be the relocation of the DLI museum there. Talk about Durham history and I guarantee top 3 topics, Cathedral, DLI and Coal.

But you are bitter and twisted though. Its not that you don't want the money spent on special needs, only a crank wouldn't, its the fact you don't want it spent on Redhills, because it represents something you clearly don't like. The likes of Hopper and the DMA campaigned all their lives against the type of cuts that have forced the likes of the council to be in a position to have to choose between Redhills and special needs when distributing tax payers money, can you not see the irony?

The last time there was somewhere good to eat

Wasting your time here

Are people really arguing on here about events 35 years ago? Let it go!
To some people who were there it is still raw, the beatings, unlawful entry to property and freedom to move curtailed by the people who were supposed to uphold the law mainly the Met police. Myself I have a decompression to my skull and a problem with my left eye to remind me of that year plus a conviction for harassment alarm and distress later overturned on appeal with help from the union solicitors. It took me along time to trust the police again, the force nowadays is nothing like corruption that existed then especially in the MET. The past is indeed another country the youngen on here could not really comprehend the unrest and how divided the country was in the Thatcher years.

Makes you wonder how she stayed in power being so horrible.

Some on here are very shortsighted. Council's invest in events such as the Gala because it generates money for businesses and promotes the City and the area as well as generating good will within the community. You may have noticed that all over the country at this time of the year local authorities of all political shades hold town and community festivals of all types for exactly the same reasons. I know of one Tory run council in a very small town that holds/funds several weekend long events during the summer of every year and people pour in.

What a very dull existence lacking in properity most of us would be forced to have if were left to some. I suppose a cultural event to them would be a trip to the betting shop and then down to the pub.

As are the unions betraying the majority who voted leave in County Durham

That’s absolute bullshit, the unions are only answerable to their members. They are there to fight for and to serve the interest of those fee paying members.

They are not answerable to the population of County Durham as you wish to push and they certainly won’t be answerable to a staunch UKIP’er like yourself.

And now asking for 1.1 million quid off the county's tax payers to restore their building. Disgusting

How is it disgusting you f***ing melt? They’re asking for help, they’ll have put together a presentation as to why they feel they should get that help and then the council will likely hold a democratic vote amongst it’s leaders to determine whether or not they feel it is a worthy enough cause.

It would’ve been disgusting if they themselves ran the council and took 10 million for themselves while other public services were left to rot - but it’s a democracy, they’ve asked and they will have to wait and see if they are fortunate enough to get.

Have you ever been to Redhills? It’s a fantastic building and somewhere that thousands of council taxpayers in Durham will be very fond of and will be happy to be looked after. It’s a building that to many is as important a part of our heritage as the Cathedral and Castle.

Just because the trade union movement means fuckall to you, doesn’t mean it isn’t important to others.

But you are bitter and twisted though. Its not that you don't want the money spent on special needs, only a crank wouldn't, its the fact you don't want it spent on Redhills, because it represents something you clearly don't like. I don’t think he can, but then people with his warped view of politics generally can’t. They’ve been brainwashed to think that it’s one thing or another, complete race to the bottom thinking.

Whereas I, the trade unions, socialists and I suspect you, sir - would rather go the other way and say ‘why can’t we have BOTH (or ALL)??’

We should be able to have Redhills, the DLI museum, an ice rink, various sporting venues and fantastic services for the education of those with special requirements. Among several other things that a first world country should boast.

The reason we don’t? because of the Tories and their bullshit austerity.

Did you think it was disgusting when DCC helped bail out DCCC... Of course not. You rightly viewed it as something that should be done as its in the interest of the community.

I'd argue that there's more people have a connection with mining heritage in Durham than cricket.

I agree that it's tragic that it's been allowed to go to ratshit whilst some members have feathered their own nests. However, that's no reason why DCCC shouldn't look to help out.

It's an incredible building that should be restored and given back to the community to be enjoyed.
