Sunderland Council buying Elephant Tea Rooms Building

People try to blame Hitler for Sunderland being destroyed but our forebears did the majority of it. Shocking that they were allowed to remove that. I'd like to think it could be restored but would need private investment for that.

This is good news however.

next time you're in Fawcett St have a look at the great buildings that are still there however all the ground floors have been vandalised by the addition of modern big windows etc, f***ing disgraceful that it was allowed by the councils over the years both labour and tory

Good news, would be nice if they can restore it as the ground levels look shite and tacky.

Is that building with the photographic sort of cover ever going to be sorted? It’s been like that for years now, I remember seeing it for the first time thinking it must be temporary.

Aye I've always said that myself. "Just look up". Still loads of nice buildings around further east of course. Sunniside and Norfolk st. Obviously attempts made to clean that up and make it busier but they need to push more on that - in fact why isn't that food festival just being held there? The perfect place for it. Some lovely buildings on Villiers st. don't know if they are used or not.

An antiquarian library and space for dementia workshops.

I hope they're building new car park to cope with the demand...

Don't get me wrong I like old Sunderland pictures and all of the historical side of the libraries, but we have a library for that already.

I'd like to see a posh tea room. There's only a few places that do a decent afternoon tea in Sunderland and they're normally packed out on the weekends.
It used to be a tea room, so take it back to that. Theres food place near there doing well, so why not try and focus it into a restaurant/food quarter.

I don’t mind the council buying it but surely it would be better to try get some sort of commercial enterprise going in the building because as sure as shit at some point the council is going to say you know what we haven’t the funds to run it and then it just lies dormant.
Or do something in the ground floor and develop the other floors for apartments to pay for the running costs for future years

Maybe there is no demand at present. Hopefully the Council will act as custodian until that happens.

That was the 60s for you. At least the building is still standing, unlike a lot of old Victorian buildings which were reduced to rubble (we know which ones we are talking about).
