Sunderland Council buying Elephant Tea Rooms Building

Mind, in fairness plenty other towns and cities ripped out the ground floors of beautiful buildings to provide shop fronts. Oxford street for example.

It's just that they have got a Zara or Selfridges or even a River Island rather than an empty bank or cheap furniture store.

Local Studies on 1st Floor and a Careers Advice I think. That's it.

Binns. Sigh.

And council customer services on the ground floor. Guessing it will be going to the new civic centre...Cabinet backs business case for council move to VAUX site - Sunderland City Council

Anyway hopefully this building will get some of the Sunderland's 'Historic High Streets' Heritage Action Zone (HAZ) money that Mackies Corner is getting to do shop frontage etc...sadly I doubt they’ll get the funding to replicate the original frontage.

With good reason. The track record for this shower of a shit council, where preserving buildings is concerned, is not at all glowing now , is it?

Its no different to anywhere else in the country tbf. Much of the destruction was done in the 60's & early 70's when old buildings were out of fashion.
People slate the council for this, then claim that Newcastle wouldnt have done it, as they look after their heritage as if T Dan Smith never existed.

Indeed. Sheffield for example is concrete city. Some of it is awful. We are all wise after the event.

Doubt those skills even exist now. Or if they do, the cost will be prohibitive. Would be nice. Sad that it was removed. Mackie's Corner would look nice as it's a lovely old building.

However at least there are a few of the old ones luckily in the same area, HAZ.

Just look at Grainger street and quite a lot of the original ground floor frontages have been replaced with modern infills well at least around the grey st monument end. The difference is predominantly the quality of the use that is in that space.

Sure the skills exist but cost will be high. Also modern retail wants as much light as possible hence why it was probably removed in the first instance. Think it would be a decent bar, restaurant cafe however probably not quite the right timing for it now. Hopefully as it’s been a bank it’s been kept in reasonable condition.
