Sunderland Council buying Elephant Tea Rooms Building

Never noticed what a good looking building that is until that picture!
when sitting in the Biz R opposite always notice what a nice building it is and completely wasted as it is

next time you're in Fawcett St have a look at the great buildings that are still there however all the ground floors have been vandalised by the addition of modern big windows etc, f***ing disgraceful that it was allowed by the councils over the years both labour and tory
<< this, council planners ruined sunderland

It does but what would you have done with it if there is no demand at present?
No idea, I suppose they could buy it and convert the upper floors to social housing of some sort, let’s be honest there’s not going to be a load of new retail people wanting it,
At least that way it could eventually cover the running costs of what they want to do downstairs

Chances are there'll be some kind of heritage lottery funding involved in it.
You’d hope so to keep the building going just because of its overall beauty.
Failing that a massive brothel:lol:

Negativity again on here.
Well done the Council, it's a magnificent building and we haven't got many of those.
Sounds like they may possibly be redoing the facade on the ground floor which somehow was allowed to be developed into a 60's style frontage back then.
It's chockablock with smashing buildings.

The FDS-CeX on Fawcett Street being the pick of the lot.

That was the 60s for you. At least the building is still standing, unlike a lot of old Victorian buildings which were reduced to rubble (we know which ones we are talking about).

Railway Station North End.
Town Hall.
Wheatsheaf Lighthouse.
Grand Hotel.
Palmers Arcade.
Old 29.
Blacketts.

With good reason. The track record for this shower of a shit council, where preserving buildings is concerned, is not at all glowing now , is it?
