“I chose the connection to light for two main reasons; firstly as an ever-lasting tribute to the region’s mine-workers and proud industrial heritage and in the expectation and hope that the stadium would be a guiding light in the future,” he said.

“The name is very much a symbolic link to the thousands of miners and Sunderland supporters that emerged from the darkness and into the light every day when they returned to the surface after working in the mine."

Let's see if that has any meaning still

if that even when you look at the lower Premier league clubs which still have all the tv exposure that comes with that

even less money then

I wouldn't expect them to be chewing around with a change in ground signage, media and the likes of any literature/stationary if it wasn't in the least bit worth it.

No it doesn't.

The ground will be sponsored so it will still incorporate the SoL name.
Yes it does, the name will include the name of the sponsor, i.e. The (insert sponsors name) Stadium of Light. That is a rename as it is currently just called the Stadium of Light.

The video refers to it as naming rights.

I'm setting up a Just Giving page if anyone could chip in and help. The Stadium of Becs would be canny

So the name 'Stadium of Light' will still be incorporated but with a sponsor paying for their company to be added to it.

You're a raging fanny if you've got a problem with that like.

Plenty of complaints regarding poor value and concerns over the title without any information on the sponsor, naming and money involved out in the public arena yet - just another day of misery on the SMB

Agreed. Short term gain which will set a precedent for generations to come. Tragic.

Where did he say he had a problem with it? He's disagreeing with you not the fact we have put the renaming rights up for sale. If you add a sponsors name to the stadiums name you have renamed it. You have sold the naming rights to a sponsor

Makes financial common sense to sell the naming rights. Only a complete numpty would suggest otherwise.
I agree, but get sick and tired of those that constantly bleat on about never liking the name and that we pinched it from Benfica, change the f#cking record.
Oh and while I'm at it whatever sponsor we get for naming rights the name or Company we end up using will not be universally accepted, let the bickering continue.

Huawei Stadium - Huawei The Lads etc - theyve had a bit of negative press lately, a chance to get things back on track ;)
