Met him about 6 weeks ago in the town and he had me hook line and sinker. Having heard that interview he is as good as dead to me now. I don’t even post anymore and I was that incensed I had to come on and have a look. No doubt those knackers at Roker Report were right up his hoop.

How f***ing dare he man

His tone and words were bitter and outright disgraceful. Completely out of touch despite peddling his ‘man of the people’ narrative all year.

Also the irony being that Lee Clarke has a lot of good things to say about Sunderland 20+ years later. Charlie Methven couldn’t give a fuck about Sunderland and that’s pretty clear. As has already been stated, his business is public relations ffs.

It was a good interview, he pretty much nailed it for me, I can understand why Charlton took more fans to Wembley so I’m not going to get my knickers in a twist about that.

How was it a good interview you knacker? Our fans weren’t louder than theirs? Our own director has used that as a mitigating factor as to why we didn’t win the match. Completely ignoring the utter disgrace that took place on the pitch and sideline.

Common sense at last

Maybe he chose his words wrang but people throwing their toys out of their prays owa this

Bit daft really

Had he said what cowrie said all those years agan yes

But not this

I fully understand and accept that we had no divine right to beat a team in far better form than us and with more creativity
I have no problem with him mentioning that we were quiet, we were but then Charlton were hardly Galatasaray and noise had nothing to do with us not closing a ball down with seconds to go nor failing to deal with a bog standard cross. It also had nothing to do with their mistake for the opening goal. What I don't particularly care for, however is the ill-though out pointing towards the unsold seats, 6 weeks after we've been there and in full knowledge of the expense of these trips to a support largely drawn from low income areas. Charlton however had a trip akin to us going to Newcastle.
Totally correct. Add to the fact we have been playing slow predictable shit football since December and following the same script of sitting back inviting the other team onto us and trawling out a draw . 19 in this league is incredible.
Over 40k packed Wembley for the CT thinking it was a once in a decade visit only to see yet another miserable game.
Incredibly over 34k still went 7 wks later at short notice on a bank holiday and live on tv to again watch a terrible performance.
Charlton deserve to go up without a doubt , however to compare the level of support between us is unforgivable. Our average home and ST sales aswell as our away followings are Premier League and the fans have risen to all the challenges set by the new guys.
The bulk of Charltons support at Wembley was first time day trippers .
That said they were noisier than us once they got going.

I was over the loss by the time I got back to Wembley Park. I knew I had another few hours of beers and laughs with my mates and Dad who had spent hundreds of quid each. Then get home and hear that wasn’t good enough.

Lovely he remembered ya name Ger. How dare he have a go at the fans. He doesn't see my lad crying, ...all of us spending a fortune twice in 8 weeks. Season ticket's paid for next season. Fans have travelled all over. Nah. Not having it.

Don't think he meant to have a go at the fans just the way it came out

I've said some daft things in my time ( like it's my round ) but I didn't mean them or worded it wrang

Tbf he’s a PR guru and should know exactly what to say and what not to say.
He’s been spot on last season as has SD however maybe there’s a few cracks appearing cos of the pressure/disappointment

If the cracks were appearing then he starts on the club, players and management. The only thing about this club that isn’t a joke is the fans and that’s who he started on.

“Charlton have been in the Premier League for much of the last 20, 30 years and they had 40,000 fans to our 34,000'

The first part is absolute bollocks. Charlton have spent 8 seasons in the top flight since 1990. We've had more than twice as many seasons in the top flight, in the same period. We've just spent 10 years in a row in the PL, only 2 years ago! Charlton haven't kicked a ball in the PL in 12 years man, and they've spent half of them in League 1!

The 2nd part is true, but trivial. Yes, they had a few thousand more fans than us. Why? Well, we've just taken 40k Wembley 2 months ago, and if you haven't noticed, we live 260+ miles away. Charlton, on the other hand, haven't just been to Wembley, and live right round the f***ing corner and could get to Wembley quicker than I can get to the SOL! And I live in the North East... they're also the form team in the league, whereas we've barely won a game in months, already lost at Wembley this season and haven't won at Wembley since the Jacobite Rebellion.

As for the whole 'made more noise' element. That's probably true, but it works against his argument that Charlton are a bigger club. Charlton were very enthusiastic, and had a pitch invasion just for getting to the final. Sunderland are ashamed of themselves for even being in this league, and went into the playoffs in a bad atmosphere from not going up automatically. It was a failure for Sunderland to even need to be in the playoffs. If you want your fans to generate noise, I also find that attempting to win the match helps. Starting a playoff final with no wingers, 1 isolated lump for a CF and playing 78 holding midfielders doesn't exactly help.

I’ll sign off with this, Charlton fans definitely made more noise than us, that scene when they scored the winner was a look to behold. They’ve had their fair share of bad luck regarding owners I’ll give them that.

They also lived round the corner. They didn’t spend £400+ (Just for me) at the Checkatrade and another £500 this time. You can definitely argue they were the better XI on the day and I don’t hold that against them. Thought they were marginally better first half but we controlled second without any penetration.

For one of the managing directors to come out and grief the fans, well fuck me sideways

Anyone defending his attack of the fans are equally as culpable. We didn’t demand promotion. We sleepwalked into the playoffs when we had the league title by the bollocks and we STILL took 35k to Wembley. Sunderland isn’t an affluent area unless Charlie knew otherwise? We were shit and we got beat, fair play to Charlton. Then comes the time for reflection and repentance from players and owners....but oh no the fans are at fault.

He’s right about the performance and noise of the fans at Wembley, however having a pop that we sold less than Charlton is ridiculous really.

We sold out a 48K seater stadium on boxing day, sold out the Checkertrade final, just about every away game (if not all) and sold more season tickets than the year before, despite being a league lower.

Starting to come across as a right tosspot.
What you have to remember, and this has been true forever and a day, it is always the fan's fault!
