Charlie Methven on metro radio

He wasn’t asked about closing the ball down, or failing to deal with a cross. He was asked about Sunderland being too big a club for this league. Should he have said that Charlton should stay in league 1 despite beating us in the play off final because they live closer to Wembley?

Why would he say that? That would be completely absurd.

Why would we lose that? Ellis Short paid the debt (he accrued) off.[/QUOTE
It’s been massively blown out of proportion what he said but it’s not really a shock. He was basically saying we had no divine right to go up over a club like Charlton.

So why didn't he say that instead of turning a question about the size of the club into a pop at our fans who find it harder to get to Wembley than Charlton fans? The interviewer didn't even mention us. Told us to 'get real' then the day after said we want 100 points.

Whether we are a big club or not has fuck all to do with Charlton, or how many fans made a 600 mile trip on Sunday or not.

The stupid kernt puts his foot in it every time. That's the 2nd time he's had a pop at the fans

How many people are putting the boot in have heard what he said. 40 mins into the Podcast today and Charlie coming across alright.

I listened to the metro radio interview, (umpteen times to make sure I was hearing right) and I also listened to the podcast. Methven came across similarly in both. Brash, quite rude to his interviewer, aloof and when he doesn’t like questions posed he sets himself questions that he is comfortable answering which then makes him sound like he’s got his shit together and not ruffled. Donald answers far more courteously and politely even when the questions aren’t brilliant.

Methven’s ‘man in the pub’ comment was revealing on two fronts. One, he attempted to belittled the lad asking questions and two he isn’t particularly all that interested in the man in the pub’s opinion as he pretends to be. He needs to change tact otherwise supporters will properly turn on him in future

Maybe, just maybe he was being respectful to the team that beat us.

No-one was being disrespectful to them. The interviewer asked a bit of a shit question, that's all.

I didn't hear one person on the way out of that ground saying we should be promoted instead of them due to our average crowd or anything else as they were the better side

I noticed that like. Totally cut Donald off as well at that point. I can't stand that interviewer but felt a bit sorry for him. Don't really see the point in offering to do a podcast and then get aggy over a simple question.

I thought it was a reasonable question as well. It should be asked why a manager doesn't know how to fit his marquee signing, who was his top target, into his team. I'm not convinced he'd ever seen him play tbh.

So the interviewer asked a bit of a shit question, right after the game? Would have been interesting to see what would have happened if he’d asked SNQ that question....
